I just bought some meal worms from my local bird food store ( I have two nests full of carolina wrens so I thought I'd give momma and papa a break ) and I was wondering if they will multiply given the right conditions ? does any one know ?

meal worms ?
All I know is that they're darkling beetles. The bluebird site has info about raising them:

thank you claypa,
two great resources, I am not sure If I am up to the task but I may try if my wrens really like them

I've "grown" my own for a couple of years now.. it's so easy!
I keep them in a plastic container that has about 2 inches of cornmeal in it and about once a week I throw in a piece of banana peel for the moisture. The container is kept in my closet because they love dark and warm. I punched holes in the lid of the container and have never had any escape LOL. About twice a year, I completely change out the cornmeal and replace with new.
When I need some, I pick out the biggest and keep the tiny ones in the container. Sometimes during the summer, the large mealworms change to beetles too fast, so I take some and put them in a covered container in the refrigerator..the cold slows down the changeover to beetles. The beetles lay the eggs and then die. The larvae are the mealworms.
That's it! You just have to get past the thought of touching worms with legs LOL.. I used to use plastic gloves :)
