Would love cuttings & question 2 color blooms

Pearisburg, VA(Zone 7a)

I was lucky enough to receive 3 brugs a few years ago. Now they live at my mother's because she LOVES them. She overwinters them in her basement since we are VA folks. One is blooming now and one the same stalk there is a white bloom and a peach bloom. Is this normal? There is another bloom on a different stalk that white. They have never bloomed multiple colors on one stalk. Does this happen? It is clearly peach and very pure white.

Also, I would love to get her starts from Amethyst and wildfire or any reds/hot pinks. She has the one mentioned, a vivid yellow and the 3rd hasn't completely opened yet but appears to be white.

If you have starts and would consider postage or trade please let me know.

Kathy,
Many factors influence bloom color: age of plant, temperature, light, fertilizer, age of the bloom, etc. The white flowers may be younger than the peach flower.

Brugmansia sanguinea, B. flava ('Wildfire' and 'Amethyst' are B. flava hybrids.) and B. vulcanicola don't grow well or at all in hot areas. You can readily find B. sanguinea seeds. They germinate well, but can literally die on you overnight once the temperatures leave the 70s. The others are rarer, but just as impossible to grow in most of the US. That's why most of us drool over the few well grown ones.

"Red" ones like Spot or Joli are European cultivars and are very expensive when offered because the importer spent a lot of time and money on their mother plants. Imported plants have to be quarantined for two years and inspection visits paid for.

The hot pinks are easier. Unfortunately, I can't help you there. I've had to start from scratch and my plants are too small right now. Have you checked out the Marketplace here at Dave's?

I didn't realize they were so rare. I've had these 3 from someone at DG for years. We bring them inside in fall and they stay in the basement where it's never below 65 or so. I never dreamed they would be so expensive as that $200 post I saw. Thanks for giving me some info because I've never researched them.

The yellow and white bloom both opened at the same time. Mom is on vacation and we both couldn't wait to see which colors we had - bad memory. So I was there on Saturday and they had not opened, went there yesterday (Monday) and there was a pure white and soft, but obvious peach on the same stalk. How long do they normally live? Should I try to get cuttings now or is this a bad time of the year? I printed the instructions on cuttings but haven't read them yet.

My mom is actually in TX right now with her 2 bothers and each spouse at a church event. San Antonio I think but are you near the hurricane or tropical storm?

Thanks for the info on brugs and I'm headed to the Marketplace. I can't wait to see what other colors bloom on this mixed one. I need to post a picture.

If you take cuttings from your brugs, wait till it is newar the frost season. If you cut them now, they will not bloom anymore. Most everyone will wait till it is in danger of getting frost, then they bring them inside, or take cuttings, and get them started for the next year.
There are a coule of ways to root your cuttings, you can put them in water with peroxide, and make sure you change the water every day, until you see little white nubbies on the cutting, then you can place in soil, or you can just lay the fresh cutting on its side in soil cover about half of the cutting with soil. Not completely covered. . Keep it moist, but not wet.
Like mine.

Thanks tater - I'm going to give it a shot. I was looking in the coop thread and saw someone just had a brug coop. I never saw a price on any of the threads but it's over now anyway. I would like to find a couple more for mom. Maybe if I get these started I can trade. I need to post my pics of this multi brug.

Thanks for the info - and picture.

If you go here, there are several people that sell the cuttings, plants, or seeds.

I don't think I want to try seeds - won't that take forever to get blooms? But - let me look for cuttings.

You can plant seeds now, keep them going through the winter, and then be ready for next year. Get a head start on them.
Just be careful when you bring them inside. Aphids and spider mites like the plants indoors, so keep the spray handy.

Are they easy from seed? Seems like a big plant for a seed to grown into.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Kathy, they are relatively easy to start from seed. They need light to germinate so don't bury the seed completely. Press the seed on the surface to get good contact. You could also sprinkle just enough potting soil to make sure of having good seed/soil contact. There are as many ways of starting seeds as there are people: peel the seed or not, on paper towels, coffee filters, in baggies, community planting, individually, special germinating soil mix, regular potting soil, seed starting cubes, etc. It helps to start with sterile soil or starting medium. Keep the humidity high and the starting medium moist but not wet. Soaking overnight helps speed up germination. Pick a method you feel comfortable using.

The major part of the storm should pass slightly north of me. It has been so dry that any way we can get rain is going to be very welcomed. San Antonio is farther south and west of here so things shouldn't be bad there either.

I have a bunch of seedlings I started about about a month ago. The ones on the right are devils trumpet, and angel trumpets on the left.
They are very easy. I soaked mine in water overnight, then put them in a pot with new miracle grow soil. Once they got to be about an inch or so tall, I transferred them to new pots.
I lost only 2 monster white brugs, and I lost 5 double purple datura. Not bad...

That is amazing. Ok - I'm going to give seeds a try. I saw seeds for sale on the marketplace - I guess that's as good a place to start as any.

Betty, thanks for the weather info -I talked to mom yesterday and we didn't even discuss the weather. She's just tried from pushing my stepdad in the wheel chair in the heat.

I bought 3 cuttings from Gone2 seed on the market place and just had blooms from one of them... I can vouch for her.... great rooted plants! I was very impressed with the roots on the ones she sent me!

JT at Gone2seed is a guy. :-) But he does send out nice plants.
