Begonias in Southern California

Hi!! Moreno Valley Garden Club had an expert on begonias at our last meeting and I was very impressed. I am thinking about purchasing and planting tuberous begonias on the north side of my house which only gets sun during the summer. Otherwise it has diffused sunlight. I looked up a couple of links on Google. The links both said to start begonias in winter. Is this true of a mild winter, hot summer area?

I really am excited about starting tuberous begonias in my garden.
