Record High Temps.....Bummer

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

It's 105 right now and we haven't hit the hottest part of the day yet...savig grace is the slight breeze even if it feels like a blast from the furnace below...

Yup, it's pretty darned hot alright.

I've been napping a lot, under the AC :~)

Our a/c has been out since Thursday, repair men are backed up until Monday. I'd die if it weren't for popsickles, box fans and a kiddy pool.lol

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

The AC in my truck went out on Thursday. No fun driving in the heat at all!!

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

AGGGGGHHHHHHH........poor Cocoa....you too Steph...we all should have gone with Phyllis...looks like it's 84 there today....bet she's up there saying God, It's good to be up north....LOL....she picked a good week for her trip...

"eyes"

I'm finding ways to cope:0) Steph...you need one of those spray bottles with a little fan attached. Just saw the news, at least the South is getting some rain, good for them!

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

I wholeheartedly agree about the little fans! Saved my bacon once at Boy Scout camp in July.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I did very little outside today for sure. We ran sprinklers every night this week and early in the mornings things look ok but by 11 they are stressed. Some of my sun loving natives are even trying to drop leaves etc. One that is doing great though is my Desert Willow I got from Frostweed. It is just starting to put out it's first buds!!!

The power has been out here for most of the day. Went out for nearly an hour around 4pm stayed on 20-30 minutes. Off again and they came to install a new transformer on the pole out back. About time, it was over 30 years old and had a habit of konking out when the going got rough. Power back about 9 pm.

Soooo sorry, Lynnea. We had ours out in the great heatwave of 80. Took two weeks for them to get a new unit. All the wholesalers were completely out. We sat in the kiddie pool almost all the time.

We didn't have anything but an attic fan when I was growing up. How did we make it????... Sure don't want to try now.

Stephanie, hope you can get your truck fixed.

Sheila, we just "thought" it was hot the day you and Phyllis were here.
My plants are cooked. As you say, water twice a day and it is not enough. Right now the wind is blowing which is certainly no help. Dries everything out even worse.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Hope you get the a/c going again Lynea. Just getting someone to come work on one in the hot sun and hot attic would be difficult.
Stephanie.... I hope you can fix your's in the truck soon too. If I can help, I am only a short distance away.
Christi..... I can't imagine not having a place to come inside and cool off. Was it also out at your neighbor's too? Did the fish do ok? Sure glad you got the power back on for tonight. I think I would be sleeping in my swimsuit on the deck with a water mister if that happened!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Sheila, the power went off at about 50 homes. Becky has the fish in her big pond. One less thing for Mike to deal with. Sure glad too because they may have cooked in my little pond.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, I remembered she had your fish, but guess they weren't effected, since a lot of her's was in the shaded area. Good thing they weren't still in your small one!
Well need to dress and get outside before the heat gets too bad.

Thank for the sympathy, but honestly it's not that bad. It's nothing like the two weeks we went without hot water in the dead of Winter. That was flat out miserable!!! We got the cool air last night from the Southern storms and I even reached for a blanket at some point last night. Talk to the a/c guy this morning he has 15 calls to make today...we are #1 on the list...woo hooo

I never thought about fish suffering. At what temps does it become dangerous for them?

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

record high temps I can handle--tropical storms to deal with on Monday mornings, now that's a bummer
;)

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

My "pond" is a 2x4x6 stock tank. It is partially shaded but with this heat, it can get very hot.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

OHHHH....you better put some ice in that pond....or find a cooler place in a wash tub or something...those little critters will steam for sure...

"eyes'

Any ideas for keeping dogs cool. My really old dogs seem to be suffering the worst. I have water dripping in a sandbox for them to dig in a cool spot, but any other ideas I'd love to hear.

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Can you get a kiddy pool. I know my dogs love em.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

How about those curvy mist sprinklers?

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Yea that is a good idea also, I am thinking about getting a couple for the chickens.

Those misters are a great idea, maybe it will keep an area cool enough that they don't dig in my beds looking for damp soil.

We have lots of natural water ponds, the younger dogs go swimming a few times a day. Our oldest has such bad arthritis it's all he can do to get across the yard. We got the a/c fixed and going. For now I've let him in the house...boy, does he look relieved. lol

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Awwwwwwwww poor guy, hope he is nice and cool, and you also :) My ac is new and if it went out I would move. HE HE HE just kidding, I would be on the phone to my son in law, he is AC man. He would fix me right up 1st.

What a great son in law to have! He's probably really swamped this time of year too! Our poor repairman said everyone was angry with him because he was so booked in advance. He can charge what ever he wants, you couldn't drag me into a hot attic this time of year...it's the spiders that scare me.lol

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Yea he is kinda special and yes he works sun up to way past dark.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Well all this talk of a/c not working.. worked a hex on me! I started smelling burnt wiring about an hour ago and my DH and son said they didn't smell anything but paint (son is painting garage). I left to go to pick up some Subs; then saw when I got back they were bringing in a tall ladder. Their noses finally started working; plus they agreed with me then because the a/c had quit!
The compressor appeared to be running but the blower wasn't. We immediately called the company we bought the unit from and within 30 minutes he was here!! Very lucky a tech was in our area. The company is out of Burleson, so if anyone wants a recommendation I will send the info by dmail. We got bids from several companies for Trane systems and they were the lowest about 5 yrs ago when we bought it.
....Anyway, turned out it was a capacitor (sp). Fixed in 10 minutes but cost $135, but no complaints here!! We never broke a sweat.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Was it from fire ants, Sheila? We've had that happen twice. Something about how they like the electromagnetism... :(

Midway, TX(Zone 8b)

I have a kiddy pool for my dogs. I also put ice in their water bowl sometimes. They think that's pretty cool. ;)

We lost our power last night around 7:30 pm and didn't come back on till 4 am this morning. Many towns around us were without power due to the high winds and rain.

I hope everyone will be safe through the next couple of days.

Lin

Close call, Sheila! I'm stunned it only took them 30 mins...I think thats one of those city perks.lol

Is everyone loosing their electricity for the same reason? I thought I heard on the news they were considering rolling blackouts...but they haven't started them, have they?

Lin, I wonder if the dogs would like frozen rib bones? Do your dogs chew the ice?

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

My cat likes ice cubes in his water, just a couple a bowl...

Maybe Edouard will bring us some relief!

The AC in my truck still isn't working, but DH (who's out on disability right now) has been driving me to work and picking me up. His AC is on the fritz, but at least it works better than mine!! LOL He thinks the AC is leaking freon. We might have to take it to a repair shop, which we don't really have the funds for at the moment. It's done this before, but it was the heater that didn't work then. Neither of us can remember what he did to fix it.

Sheila, sorry to hear about your AC, but so glad you got it fixed quickly. I might be d-mailing you for the name of the company! Never know when it will come in handy!

Everyone, please stay cool and make sure your pets are cool, too.

Cocoa~do you give your dog any kind of joint supplement? Cosequin is excellent! They have a dog formula. I give the cat formula to my old girl and it's done wonders for her. She's jumping around again like she's a kitty!

Oh Ac troubles are the worst! I sympathize with all of you having trouble with it. Ours went out earlier this year, but fortunately one of my dearest friends is an AC guy and he bought the part for m and talked me through installing it LOL I was so proud!! And it only cost 70 bucks!

I normally don't look forward to any tropical storm but rain sure would be nice now. I simply cant water enough....

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Pattie, it wasn't ants with the a/c; but out at the pond they shorted out one of the GFCI's which controlled about three outlets. DH got that one fixed yesterday. The part that went out on the A/C was inside the door in the house that houses the unit.
Lynea...Yeah City life is hectic sometimes, but nice when you need help in a hurry.
Joey... Lucky this time of year to know someone reliable; we would have paid double for it to be fixed! The unscruplous know they have you over a barrel this time of year too.

LOL yeah down here having an AC guy in the family is as good as a doctor!!

Midway, TX(Zone 8b)

Cocoa one of my dogs will chew the ice once it's melted to a little piece. But they both like to lick the ice and more or less play with it.

Joey we are suffering from the drought here too so I do hope we get some more rain today. I'm having a hard time watering enough too.
Lin

Happy Birthday Joey!

I tried out the ice cubes this morning, it was hysterical. The two youngest dogs were following me to see what treat I would be putting in their dish. When I put the ice in their water it cracked and popped. They both jumped back and with ears perked started circling their water dish like it was going to attack them.lol

Steph, thanks for the Cosequin tip, i'll ask our vet if it's right for Huff. I know he is on a anti-inflammatory and something that helps lubricates the joints (I can't spell either with out getting the bottles.lol). Both are from the vet and Huffy is much better with them. He's really getting on in age to the point our vet has been giving us gentle reminders we may have to make some hard decisions soon.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I had a dog that used to have a fit when I dropped a piece of ice on the kitchen floor. Talk about spaz time!
