auger

Has anyone tried the auger attachment you can get for your drill that digs a hole for a bulb?

And/or: What is your favorite way to plant bulbs in the fall? And when do you plant them?

Thanks,

NO, I havent tried that butit is certainly an excellent idea if you only want to plant single bulbs in certain locations.

When I mass plant bulbs I always dig a big hole(12' deep or so and mix in lots of bone meal and /or bulb food. and if you are having trouble with critters eating your bulbs, make a chicken wire cage and place your bulbs in them first before you plant, then plant the whole cage, giving room for them to grow and multiply. Caging also is handy if you will planting overtop of the spring bulbs because you will hit the cage instead of the bulbs when digging around.

Hi,
I have one that attaches to the drill. It works well but it would be easier if you had a real good cordless drill.

I do, HoniBee, I went out and bought myself a present this spring ... a powerful cordless drill driver with adjustable speeds... for putting together furniture and stuff...

thanks for the tip!

I bought one of those augers a couple of years ago. The idea is nice but I think it's easier to just dig the holes ... or use one of those circular blades you push into the soil and take the plug out ... what ever those thingies are called. I have one with long handle that you step on that works pretty good. The auger only seems to work well if the soil is already loose... so if you have to loosen the soil you might as well dig the holes.

It's just called a bulb planter,I think. I rarely use mine.

But I usually dig(till) up an area like previously mentioned, amend and plant'
