We had a pretty good-sized eucalyptus taken down 2 years ago. It was never intended to be a permanent tree in the yard, so we had planted it on a mound so it would be easier to remove. It was in place several years longer than it was supposed to be, as these things go.
I decided before we brought in a stumpgrinder that I would like to see what it looked like dug out, so the guys who are redoing our watering system did that for me today.
I think it looks really cool, and my harebrained scheme is to leave it in place, maybe sandblast & varnish it and turn it into something interesting.
While I like the "houses chainsawed out of tree stumps" in others' yards, they're not an option in mine. I like Mediterranean / Southwest / cottage gardens, so I need something that will go with that sort of style.
I had thought until it was exposed that it might make a good table base, but the roots extend pretty far out from the trunk, so that might not work. The top of the trunk is about 2 1/2 feet in diameter.
I'm not ready to rent the stumpgrinder yet, so I'm counting on you DGers to help give me the inspiration I need----either that, or tell me this is a lousy idea!
