Little Painted Pots

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

I recently purchased three epicia plants, and I want to propagate the little stolens that are growing. I was going thru all the old threads last night and came across those little painted yogurt pots. Now, tonight, I can't find the post. I need to know what kind of paint was used and if you have to sand the yougurt cups first. Can anyone out there help me? I think they are adorable. And great recycling too!!

I'm not sure which thread you're talking about, but I do know there are paints out there that work especially for plastic. Well, I know that Krylon has a series of spray paints that are good for plastic . . . I've just gotten done spraying an empty kitty litter box and two coffee containers . . . I wanted to store things in them, but didn't want ugly coffee containers, etc! They're turned out pretty good . . .

The green has a gritty feel to it, and the silver and copper are supposed to have a "pounded metal" look once the paint is dry. I can see it in person, but it's hard to get it on camera!

I'll give the silver a go . . .

The pots that I saw were painted pink with polka dots. I'll have to go back thru the old threads again. This time I'll bookmark the page. Thanks for the info on the Krylon. I have an old metal plant stand that I am going to try painting.

Thanks MrsBonnie. That's what I was talking about. They are so cute. Do you know what kind of paint she uses. Is there a post that explains it?
Thanks again.

I just heard from Jannich and she has been real sick with a lung infection, but says she thinks she is starting to feel better. She should be around before too long. She is on her breathing machine again.

I just love Jan!

She just sent the one email in response to my email saying, "Where are you woman!"..........she really feels lousy and I am sure it is hard to be enthusiastic about posting with a breathing machine on...................I will let her rest for a day or two and then bug her again to be sure she is ok.........

Thanks for the name of the gal who made the pots. I'm sorry to hear that jannich is ill. I'll wait a few days, and them Dmail her. Her pots are adorable and just what I need to put my little stolens in.

I know Jannich uses the yogurt cups for those little pots and I have tried the yogurt cups then put an apple sauce container inside the yogurt cup (the apple sauce containers have holes in the bottoms) then place you plant pot in the applesauce container and run the wick down into the yogurt cup. Works great.
I have been saving yogurt cups to send Jannich as I think she plans on painting a bunch more this winter as a winter project :)

Thanks Kim
I started saving some cups and I bought some applesauce today. My DH wanted to know why I bought applesauce and who was going to eat it. He said no one liked it. I said I would eat it. Little did he know that I was going to make little flower pots with them. ^_^.. I saw a post on Trash to Treasure that you can spray the Hammered Paint spray on plastic. It's a thought. I'm not a very good painter and spraying them sounds quite easy.

I paint thr tiny clay pots you put mineature violets in. I use acrylic paint. They're soooo cute. 'course I don't have any painted right now to show! I put tiny flowers freehand on mine and put them in a trade.

When we had our annual Mother's Day violet sale this year, I spent a good 6 weeks ahead of time looking for pots that costs no more than 1.00 max!!! It was so much fun at the Dollar Tree and other places...........you can either do over what they have done or leave them as they are............cute either way............

imadigger - I saw the same post on plastic spray paint! I had originally bought the spraypaint to cover up the kitty litter containers I was using as planters outside . . . (they no longer look like kitty litter containers - or at least, they look like nicer ones!). Just to see, I also painted 3 2-1/4" pots and 3 1-oz solo cups of each color (white, green & terra cotta gets old). They didn't turn out bad at all! Now, once I see the blooms on some AV's, I have options of pot color . . .

I do need to tell you, though . . . if you get the pounded copper color, you'll either need to do more than one coat, or put a coat of something underneath, so the effects will show faster - I had tried to put thicker layers, but it just started running, and normal coats just weren't enough.

Very cool! I remember seeing Jannich's post last year? where she had painted the little yogurt cups. I always save the clear jello cups to use for seedlings and teeny plants as well as rooting leaves. I like to be able to see the roots growing. I eat a lot of yogurt ... think I will go dig the empties out of the recycle bin and paint a few. I cannot draw or paint anything freehand ... no talent but I can do stencil's!

Nichole, those are really nice looking pots. I can't believe you even painted 1 oz. cups you silly *lol*
Do they have colors for plastic such as purple, pink, blue etc?
I never thought of painting plastic and don't really wick many things but the things I do wick in yogurt cups would be fun to paint.
I buy these mandarin oranges that come in these fat glass containers which are just PERFECT for 3 oz. cups. You can see when the water is low and actually on some of the things I am wicking, you can see the roots which have grown through the cup and just love to be in the jar.
I will try to get a picture this morning (later as it's only 4:45 here this morning *lol*) to show you all.
The only thing is, every now and then the glass jars need to be washed a little as algae forms (takes a long time though) which is no big deal. I love these fat little jars and have them lined up on my kitchen window.

Kim - Well, they were there, just screaming to be painted! Besides, I've read that micro-mini's wouldn't need pots bigger than the 1oz cups, and I've got some of those!

As for the spray paint for plastic, here is the link for Krylon - http://www.krylon.com/products/fusion_for_plastic/

I found this link for brush painting plastic - http://www.plaidonline.com/productSearchResults.asp?cat1ID=1&cat2ID=1&cat3ID=149 - I'd bet the same products are at places like Michael's or Hobby Lobby. These would work nice for painting little decorations on your glass jars - you'd still be able to see the water level.

Syrumani, what a pretty bunch of pots. I'm going to go and buy more paint. I was just in WM to get paint to spray an old plant shelf that has rusted. I got black hammered, and also picked up copper colored paint. I'll have to check to make sure it's for plastic. I was in a rush and didn't really look at the label, just the color cap. Silly me! I also checked the clearance asile and found 4 clear green (with bubbles) juice glasses for 50 cents each. I'm going to use them as cache pots. I'll keep them on window in kitchen. Thanks for all the great painting ideas.
