Armenian Cucumbers

Richland, WA(Zone 7b)

I have the most beautiful Armenian cucumber plant I have ever grown- it only has one female blossom so far, but the cuke is 3" long. This is my first year in WA, and I am really happy with my brand new gardens.

Very nice, healthy looking plant. I just got in a bunch of asian veg. seeds that I can't wait to try but never grown any aremenian cukes. Let us know how it grows and taste.

Mine bloomed with male flowers forever before producing fruit. I thought something must be wrong with them they took so long.

Melody, that has been my experience, too. They are worth waiting for. Having the pale green skin and no stickers, and the wonderfully mild flavor- yum! And because they are not a true cucumber they have no "burps" ! I can't wait for mine- One year I had one grow in a complete circle!

may have to try some of those

Armenian cukes are more of a challenge to grow than "real" cukes- much longer germination time, and seedlings look puny sor a long time. Patience--that's the secret! Good luck!

Hmmm... I discovered the armenian cuke at our Farmer's Market last year. It's become my favorite, thin skin, crisp and juicy. Dumb question, how do you know the flower is male or female?

Richland, WA(Zone 7b)

Cucumber sexology 101 ! The female blossoms have a tiny cucumber on them- at this point they are covered with soft fuzz-I will go take a photo- be right back!

Here is the 1st cucumber- it is about 3" long now.

I'm growing mexican sour gherkins this year. They took longer than regular cuke to sprout and a long time to start growing once I planted them out but now they're going nuts. It's dark out...will post picture as soon as it get's light enough to take one. I think I sewed about 9 seeds but only 3-4 survived and I'm glad that's all that made it because I'm gonna be eating, selling at market and giving tons of them away to the neighbors once they're ready to harvest.

I may just try the armenia cuke next year.

Bigred-I am anxious to see your photos- where did you get the seeds?

Thanks, I wish my cukes were doing that. First time trying to grow them.

here's the mex. sour gherkin( I prefer to call them mouse melons). This is just one plant. I planted it out in May it didn't really take off until mid-late June. I leaned the headboard up against the container so my hub's could take it around back to wield rebar on it so I could put it out in a flowerbed and after just three days, it had it in it's grips so now I can't have the headboard until it's finished with it

I trade for a few seeds.

I think there's about 3 plants here...planted later than the ones in the container

I gave them a nice trellis to climb but they prefer to strangle the rudbeckias and now they're sneaking up on Rufus the scarecrow, fixin' to put a choke hold on him

fruit get no larger than a quarter and fall off the vine when ripe...saves me the guess work of figuring out when they'r ripe. Peel is suppose to be sour w/ interior tasting like a cuke. From what I've read...there's no in between...you either love the taste or hate it.

WOW- that is one wierd plant! I think I'll pass if the skin is bitter- I don't think peeling a quarter sized cuke would be something I would do much of! Be sure to show us some photos of the harvest!

info I found says they're great for pickling but I don't can so when they start coming off,I better develope a taste for them....LOL
