Help with OAK WILT

Whitney, TX

I have several infected trees. Does anyone have an arborist they recommend for treatment in the Waco or Dallas-FT W area?
Also, does anyone know of organic supplements to help boost the tree's immunity?

Look thru Howard Garrett's site: www.dirtdoctor.com I'm sure you will find something about it there. Did you ask on the tree forum?

Give the trees all the water you can! We treated the live oaks on our place with Alamo four years ago and lost none of the ones we treated. Our County Agent brought in an expert from A&M who gave a demo on how to infuse the trees with the fungicide. It was a little work, but not bad. We treated about thirty trees over a two week period. We treated my mother's oaks last year and saved all but the one that was the worst affected.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that you could treat them yourself. We found an arborist who is coming to look at them but it costs around $200-300 per tree to treat--will be very expensive.

Dr. David Appel from Texas A&M is a researcher specializing in oak wilt. I recommend contacting him if you decide to treat your own trees. He gave a demonstration in our neighborhood and used simple materials: a sharpshooter shovel, drill, plastic tubing, connectors, plastic tees, and regular pressure sprayers that you pump up by hand. Here's a site that shows the process. It looks more complicated in these pictures than it actually was for us.

Later a local man put together an infusion kit which he loaned to many people, including us. He used a coca-cola syrup cannister and added a pressure gauge. Instead of hand-pumping, we used an air tank to put the right amount of pressure into the cannister. The Alamo fungicide comes in quarts, and a local feed and ranch supply store ordered it for us. One quart will treat 94" of tree diameter (measured 4 1/2 feet above the ground), about 9 trees with 10" diameter, etc. It was not cheap, but we treated at least thirty medium to large live oaks over a period of two weeks with two sets of infusing equipment. This was four years ago, and I believe the cost was around $900, an average of $20 to $30 per tree. I do not know the current cost of Alamo. We had enough left over to treat my mother's trees last year without purchasing more.

Thanks. I just had an arborist come out and he doesn't think it is oak wilt because it is mainly on our post oak trees, which are usually immune from Oak Wilt. But I still think that is what it is. Our Ag Agent is going to come look at them in a few days. Maybe it is another type of fungus or disease.

Howard Garrett recommends the same thing as Dr. Appel I think. I admit that I am biased, but I think the simplest and most effective thing to do is be sure you have healthy soil with lots of microbes and plenty for them to eat.
