Probably a silly question but...Should I worry about my silkies being kept with the buff orp roos? I don't want anyone hurt! They were hatched on March 30th. One of the BO roos is already getting 'jiggy' with some of the BO pullets.
Also, I was thinking about only keeping one of the three BO Roos-any tips on who I should keep?
Thanks, Sue :-)
Buff Orp roo and silkies?
Hi, Sue, I don't know about keeping the silkies with the BO roos, but on keeping one of them, I would go with the gentlest of all. We had a BO roo with a problem...he kept attacking me!!

There is one that chases everyone in the coop! He comes up to me and just watches me! Not sure if he's trying to sum me up!
UNfortunately the orpie will wear out the silkies, especially if thre are three!
Nice looking roo. The one that is chasing everyone in the coop is asserting his dominance. He might be okay to keep, but if it was me, I would get rid of that one.

I agree! My neighbor has been "eyeing" my chickens-most people around here haven't heard of the BOs so they are abit intrigued. So I may sell him. Around here it's mostly RIReds and Barred Rocks.
Sue ☺
We had our Buffs with our Silkies for a while and when the roo started getting horney we seperated him from the rest. The BO hens were not even ready for him. They are about 6 months old now so we will probably put him back with his hens soon but not with the Silkies, they are just too small for him.
We got 6 Silkies and all are hens. We at least wanted one roo but we got all hens (at least we think we do since none are crowing or looking like roos at all). I guess we will leave them with the Cochins for now.
Well, I sold my three BO roos. Probably going to kick myself later! Had a weak moment and was talked into it! My roos were the same way-the males seem to mature faster. At least it's quieted down in the coop, no more hens squawking from the roos going after them.
I have blue silkies. The hens are lighter in color than the roos.
Are the silky roos able to fertilize a BO? Just curious!
My silky roos are just starting to crow! They mature slower than the BO's. Maybe you have a late bloomer!
Sue
