Abandoned Blue Bird Eggs.

I noticed that a pair of blue birds have not been looking into their box lately. I went to check on the three eggs and noticed two were cracked open. The only one not broken is sticky on the bottom from the others. What should I do? I throw away the two broken ones, and discarded the top portion of the nest and put the good egg back inside. I don't know what caused the two eggs to break. There are a few teensy-tiny ants crawling on and about the wooden pole. Will the birds come back to check on the egg I left in the nest? Please tell me what I should do..

Whenever you monitor a box you should determine what species is using it by examining the nesting material and eggs. You should record the date, and the number of eggs or young that you have observed. Knowing when the eggs where laid will help you determine if they are infertile, or when they should hatch and when the young would be expected to leave the nest. In the case of bluebirds, the eggs are laid one each day until the entire clutch is complete. Incubation will then begin and will last approximately 13-14 days. After hatching the chicks will remain in the nest for 17-18 days. Your monitoring should be limited to viewing from a distance after the 13th day or the chicks might fly from the box prematurely.

Thank you for this site. If I don't see either one peeking in by Wed. I'll clean out the nest.

Sound's like some other bird,maybe house sparrow or house wren's do this to. Alway's clean the box out, nest and all ,when this happen's,it's awful late in the season,but you never know I've had blue bird's try 4 time's with a box.

Thanks, That's what I've been doing. I know the blue birds have had two broods this year. With our late falls, I'm hoping for another.
