New Ginger

Melbourne, FL

Got this Ginger yesterday at Wal-Mart. It had a tag for Curcuma, but I think this is Globba (Dancing Jewels).

Nice find I was there this morning mine doesn't have the neat stuff.

If the underside of the leaf it a burgandy shade you have Globba Winitii 'Ruby Queen'

Chickenville, FL(Zone 9a)

I got one at HD also labeled curcuma. It is Globba Winitii 'Ruby Queen' aka 'Dancing Ladies' it was under 5 dollars. Mine has 4 blooms on it now. They start out white and turn really dark like yours. I am loving this plant! Maybe I will go get another one lol.

Funny, I was just about to post a photo of this one that I found yesterday for $6,.. to ask for an I.D.
Label was "Gl curcuma".

Anyone know how much shade these globbas need? The tag said "sun/part sun", but I'm reading that they need shade.
I planted mine in bright - very bright - shade. Probably gets a touch of direct sun at times. Wondering if I should move it.

Deb, I have 3 different globbas, white, dark burgundy like above, and a lighter pink. They are all located in morning sun only, and are doing really well. I think they could probably take a bit more sun if they got more water- they are in a drier shade area. I got all of them last September and these are my first blooms, and I just adore them!

Thanks, Cathy. If yours are getting morning sun in zone 9b then mine should take a bit here in 8a, and they are in a pretty moist area. I put them in the same bed with the C. alismatifolia that I planted last year.

Thanks for the info!! And they are beautiful plants.

I pointed this out to the garden center manager at our local Lowes. She said that they have to sell it as it comes labeled from the supplier. Unreal.

These are coming from Costa Color in Miami labeled like this.

Mine is a mixture of at least three of these, because there are that many flower colors. I thought at first the flowers changed from white to rose shades. Nice pics, flowerjunkie.

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

Thanks for posting those photos, flowerjunkie. Mine is either Ruby Queen or the Mauve - not sure which.

Hot Springs, AR(Zone 7b)

Ruby Queen has dark green leaves with the underside a shade a marroon. The Muave Dancing Girls has bright green leaves.

OK! Well that settles it. Mine is definitely Mauve DG. Thanks, Flowerjunkie!

Your photo is most likely Globba sp. Lavender Dragon. The leaves don't match the mauve G winitii and don't have the maroon underside like ruby queen. Unfortunately most of the G winitii look slimed don't have species names yet.

Thanks, no matter since it did not survice that last two freezes we had here.

gardenpom, were they outside? I have some also, and even though I keep them in the GH during the winter (55) they go dormant but always comes back (slowly). I would dig the tubers and store, or bring it into a warmer place to see if it sprouts back out.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Mine have always come back even from last winter. Of course, after this horrible winter it may be a different story. Mine are in pretty deep shade if that helps.

Saint Gabriel, LA

If you are in Melbourne Florida they should come back if the were in the ground, or if the pots didn't freeze. They are not evergreen and need to have a winter dormancy. If in pots keep cool and dry over winter, but above freezing. In the ground just make sure they are planted in a well drained spot. Hopefully yours aren't dead, just resting.

They came back last year, but never rebloomed. I'll just have to wait and see. If they come back I think I will try moving them to maybe a brighter location.
