I noticed in the store that the Ginger Root had "eyes" with green growth peeping out. I wonder if it might produce a vine or just what (if anything) would result from my planting it!!! Also, I then wonder how deep, etc.should it be planted (soil type ?....)......... I have 3 peices;2 are small like a marble shooter.......... Will it grow into a pretty plant???
?????Will Ginger Root grow if planted???
Yes, indeed the common edible ginger root will grow. However, it's a tropical/subtropical type of plant thus needs to be overwinter indoor. I've grown them for years. Last year they flowered for me, I was in awe, (it took a long time to produce flowers). I planted mine shalllowly an inch or so under the soil level. They multiply too pretty rapid. I've mine in dappled shade. The leaves when crush exude a pleasant aroma.
Wow, Lily, that sounds very encouraging.
Would you make some other suggestions for me please, since you have experience.
Pot size? All three (1") pieces together in1 pot? Soil mix? I usually plant in good planting soil (miricle grow or some other good brand, then ammend with a little additional sand. Does that sound good?? I havn't gotten into Ph, etc yet.
That sounds like a good start. A one gallon initially. You can alway upgrade the pot later when they get crowded. Good lucks and enjoy.
lily love - I am so glad you answered this thread...I have several gingers I was given by a friend in fl and finally planted them ( they sat in a bag in my GH for months I am so ashamed) and after only two weeks am very encouraged by their rapid growth...and to think I almost stir fried them LOL glad I saw your advice to pull and over winter...I may leave one of them in the ground as test since they are in a sheltered area...but again...thanks for your input...glad I stumbled across this thread!

Good lucks with yours. Like I stated earlier, it may not bloom this year, but next year, or later your common ginger may give you blooms as those I posted above.

What a great idea. Gives new life to the old sweet potato vine in our Southern aunts' windows.
I am on the crystal coast and have ginger in the ground. There is edible and ornamental gingers. Mine in the ground are ornamentals and not for eating but I have a root in a pot that is growing and its edible.

I have grown grocery store ginger, and it will grow alright in a season for the price easily, but if you have access to any other ornamental gingers I have found it to be more worthwhile to grow them instead. The foliage on grocery store ginger is not that spectacular, and for me the rhizomes grew kind of wide and took up a lot of space for something not hardy. All gingers are edible and have different parts which are better for cooking, and many hedychiums and a few curcumas are hardy to zone 7b which you can get to see flower.
Ok, this intrigues me. :)
So, if I want to grow it for edible purposes - I love ginger in my stir fry - then I could grow it & just pull up what I want when I need it?
where would I find some of the more ornamental...or pleasing foliage gingers..........also, the pieces that I awere small (as previously stated = marble size---should I use a larger strart) also too, I placed the 3 small root pieces in a 6' pot, but someone said 1 gal would be best....Help!
Birdie d-mail tropocana she is great with gingers. I think a pot sould be at least 3 gal. but check with her.

BirdieBlue Plant Delights Nursery carries beautiful gingers & they are zone 7 so they'd already be aclimatized....
