Need lots of suggestions....

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

I have some very shady places around the house I want to plant....and I will plant in containers. One spot is off the lanai and the pots themselves won't be visible....but the plants might grow tall enough...... and I would LOVE fragrant somethings.... The area gets bright but very indirect light....any suggestions? Doesn't have to be visually stunning...but fragrance would be GREAT.

Thanks in advance....

Ah...we have tons of NBJ all around the property...and one about 10' away from this area. HmmmmI haven't seen nicotiana around here...isn't it an annual?

Ixora odorata does well in that lighting, as does Gardenia vietnamensis. Tahitian gardenia should also so well, and there is a fragrant version of Tabermontaea (spp????) that should do well. Confederate jasmine performs well in full sun as well as filtered light. Our Artobotryus hexapetalus is in partial sun......A palm that would do well in filtered sun to partial sun is dwarf sugar palm- only blooms once a year but is pungently and intensely sweet. Murraya paniculata will tolerate partial shade. I'm sure you have some fragrant gingers already........that's just off the top of my head- might think of more later. You can also post in the fragrant forum- I'm sure you will get a very thorough list if you do that.

Pretty. I hadn't thought of Begonias because they are an invasive weed here...one kind is...
