Looking for Ducklings in Hawaii

Makawao, HI

Aloha fellow duck lovers...

I had a pair of wonderful ducks who met with an unfortunate end and I'm looking for new ones. My garden has been suffering since they left. I've had no luck ordering ducks f/the mainland. Avian Influenza concerns??? but I'm looking either for information from people who have ordered/shipped ducklings to Maui or for any fellow Mauians who know duck-diving is more than a surfing term. Preferrably looking for ancona's, Swedish Blue's, Khaki Cambells...Thanks

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

gee, that is a tight spot to be in... i don't know of anybody in this forum near you, unless australia is near you???

also, look under communties, way down towards the bottom of the page, regional gardening, there should be a froum for the islands???

really hope you get some. everybody needs a duck or two in their life...

FoxW_outTeeth,

I lived on the north shore of Oahu for 3.5 yrs ... met my wife there ... too long story.

Incubators are the easiest means of adding feathered poultry to an isolated location.

Not that I'm ever gonna recommend the following ..... but ..... If you have close friends on the mainland ..... they could or you could buy you some fertile eggs and they could then be delivered to the close friend. A close friend might be tempted to send you a gift ... sorta unmarked. You get the idea. There's always a way. I'd make certain the eggs came from a region where Avian Flu has not been reported .... in a long long long time.

I have 4 Swedish Blue ducks now (one egg hatched today ... yeah !!!! & one more scheduled for later in the day).

no offense "photographer" but you do seem to be tacitly recommending "the following," and isn't that really dangerous to the populations there? just because there's always a way, that doesn't mean that it's the right thing to do. if they're lucky enough not to have avian flu, then why risk it?

(sorry, im a newbie to the forum, pleased to meet you all!)

Isn't Avian Flu spread by migrating birds? I wonder if they have it in Australia--do birds migrate to Australia? Josh, inform us:0)!

FoxW--what a wonderful selection you want, it is exactly what I will want when I have room.

There must be a university extension service--they usually have a poultry expert--maybe they could help you find a local breeder?

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Maybe you could try the AG department at the University. I would go the legal way about it.

Makawao, HI

Thanks for all the ideas!

I will definitely check out the extension service, but I may have a lead at the local humane society...turns out 12 khaki cambell/swedish blue ducklings were turned in yesterday!

wow way cool, hope it works out for you, keep us posted

What incredible luck! Jump on it.....I hope you get there first!

Hi, Fox, were you able to get the ducks at the Humane Society?

Patch,

I noticed the telltale signs you mentioned regarding antagonistic postings and the incredibly coincidental new identities that surfaced (created by that certain someone) and who is as equally unappreciated. I am grateful for your thoughtful consideration in the matter. We do not live in a perfect world. There are individuals who at times seem to be incapable of being kind and thoughtful due to how their personalities are shaped or mis-shaped. We all handle things uniquely ... some get mad and sit there hoping issues go away and others say or do something like me and you. Most are able to recognize personality traits that are unwell. Reminds of the Unabomber who had family in New York but lived in the deep woods as a recluse. His younger brother ... a social worker of enormous moral character was able to connect the dots even though it "tore him apart" ... he reported his feelings to the authorities and they made the move to prevent the madman from doing more harm.

I sure hope Mr Fox got his Swedish Blue ducks. My newbie is about 4-5 days old ... we're hoping it is a she since its mother (the big Swedish Blue duck who laid the egg) was killed by a mink just a few days before the duckling hatched.

Lets us know about your ducklings and a big ALOHA from Kelly in Moxee

i am replying to the original post (sent to me earlier this week by other concerned posters)--not the edited and strangely congratulatory one (are you actually comparing yourself to David Kaczynski?):

kelly in moxee--i'm not sure why you're conflating me with your 'grannygoody'. i lead a busy life and only check forums on the weekends. i doubt i was alone in seeing your detailed instructions for smuggling eggs into hawaii as a tacit endorsement of the act. having spent considerable time working with the Dule natives off the coast of Central America, I'm a little sensitive to the dangers posed by smuggling exotic animals and their diseases into a fragile island ecosystem.

as for your criticism of my grammar and spelling--i'm an academic, a classicist and a polyglot, so you're lucky I'm not slipping into ionic greek every other sentence. :P

i was enjoying escaping from the ivory tower while reading this forum: i grew up upstate and a friend directed me to this forum, as I've been talking a lot recently about getting back to my country roots. our home was always filled with animals, adventure and warmth--which I am not experiencing here at the moment.

up to this point I was enjoying everyone's enthusiasm and graciousness. now? not so much.

wishing everyone well--kissybear.

ps: gratz, fox!

Kissybear, polyglot,extraordin-ear?! That's a lovely juxtaposition of- sumpin' I dunno what...The um..Ionicism of your Greek would have just been greek to me anyway.(aarggh, sorry)

I'm interested that in Hawaii they have ducks for adoption, but not purchase?! If they don't want them in the ecosystem it would seem better to send them away rather than permit them to be adopted locally... Can you give us an update, Fox?

Kissybear--Polyglot?

Have you tried gargling? Or mabe you could just have the supernumerary ones removed?

You should be ashamed of yourself!:0) What is your area of study?

kissybear, i apologize personally to you that this froum was in an uproar when you recently arrived. things have settled now, and you will not be confused with pretending to be somebody else. and thank you for attempting to speak plain english LOL. i hope that you find info and stories here that warm your heart.

I suppose I should apologize too as I was not using plain English. Polyglot and schizoglot, myself. No classicist, though.

Supernumeraries?! Aack! I got distracted wondering how many forks to a polyglot's tongue...;) Does sound like more than a mouthful to the painfully literal mind.

Lodi, United States

I wondered--there is a native Hawaiian duck!

Kissybear,

You got my D-Mail apology no doubt ... a bit later than sooner but I intended sooner.

"The path to hell is paved with the souls of those who had good intentions". .... someone else ... but a great quote.

Welcome ... Welcome! & Good Morrow! How I wish I had gotten my degree in English.
