Here's a picture of the chicks at the age they are now.
I managed a new picture
how cute
Oh they are cute! What are they? It looks like a roo and three pullets.
I think one might be a roo, but I'm guessing--it's the biggest and the first with a comb. But...maybe it's just an older pullet. Could one egg have been older? We're not allowed to keep a rooster in the city but we couldn't bear to get rid of him when me moved in. The neighbours are used to him so no one has complained. Now we have chicks... so, I'm thinking a rooster's not such a good idea. We didn't think mama was still laying (we were told that). We were very surprised!
No they should all be the same age from the same clutch--they don't start developing until the Mum has laid the last egg and started sitting. He looks like a boy to me!
I can't keep roos either:0(---although you do hear them occasionally in the neighborhood.
... in the neighborhood... hmmmm....
well maggie, good to see you again, and those chicks look great!
with enough bedding hopefully they will be fine. and you DO have a place to put the mama hen that nobody gets along with... into a pot or onto a pet adoption list...

how did hte chicks do? don't worry about those extra threads, you did good!
tf
Thanks. It's hard to get those threads sorted sometimes. The chicks did fine. They seem happy and they're enjoying their turn in the yard. I don't put them out with the roo and the other chickens yet. I'm not as sure how mama did with the other hens, but the squacking died down eventually... I really do agree about the pot or the adoption of old mama. I should give it a try. I don't really know how to go about it--what farm would want an old hen of indeterminate age when they can get young chicks of their own... We'll see. I've never killed a chicken (or anything else for that matter), so I'm not sure I'd want to start now. It sounds messy! I could do without the rooster too, as he's not very pleasant
Well some would take it just for their pot. Go to freecycle or craigslist and make a post see what you can do.
I didn't know about Craig's list or freecycle. I'll check it out. Thank you
your very welcome, I just found about them and it was great, I could have gotten my chickens locally but live and learn.
Before I can get rid of the mama I need to know about how old she is, but I don't know. She is the mom of the adult hens and chickens and also of the roo, and she now has five babies. So she can't be that old, if she's just hatched five new babies... or can she? I want to sell/trade/give some of the other hens away to and keep these chicks.
How long does the average bantam live, does anyone know?
So maybe 2 yrs old?
Do you think she's two, or that they live to be two?
I am guessing she is 2 ish. Just a guess.
Thanks Tia, I'll go with that.
