Balloon Flower Seeds

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

When are the seed pods ready for harvest? Do they turn a different color? I keep checking them and I think they're getting riper, but I'm not sure. Any ideas?

I let mine totally dry out, and when I opened them up the little black seeds just rolled out. that was last year.

Did you cut them off the plant and then let them dry or did you leave them on the plant? Did the seed pods change color?

I know I harvested some last year, but it was by pure accident and I can't remember what the seed pod ended up looking like. LOL

I left them on the plant till they turned brown.

They germinated this spring so I guess that method works!

yeppers that's the way to do it. I don't have nay yet but that is the way my grandmother always did hers ...I remember as I was always the one to help her collect seeds LOL

I've been waiting for a couple of months for the pods to turn so I can harvest those little seeds! I'm getting impatient!

oh but Steph patients is a virtue....LOL
have they started to turn brown at all?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Nope!

It is such a pain to decide whether to leave the seeds to turn brown or deadhead. If I don't deadhead they are through blooming, if I do,they bloom until frost. I may just do as I did the first time, buy the seeds in a packet for $2.29. That way I have both.

Wonder if I deadhead, will the seeds continue to ripen? That would be an option as I could then let them dry out and collect the seeds. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....!

This is what the part of the poor plant looks like as of this morning.

I have 5-6 that look the same. I asked somewhere else and was told that the seeds have to turn brown on the plant. yuk.

Well bummer! Maybe I'll just keep a few pods and trim off the rest so it'll keep on blooming. There's like 10gazillion seeds in each pod anyway! LOL

Let us know how that goes...

Steph if you dead head they will still produce seed pods from the flowers blooming so you could wait till fall to get pods

This is true! I'm leaning towards dead heading more and more!

dead head some and leave some to dry
