Is this grafted?

Alvin, TX(Zone 9a)

Just a quick question for all of you pros out there. I've seen grafted plants that are obviously grafted and this one looks like it may be, but I'm not altogether sure. Can anyone help?

The reason I'm asking is because I thought I'd lost this one and now the base of it is sending out new leaves after 2 1/2 months of nothing. If this is grafted, then I certainly don't need another Pride of Hankins so that will help. Thanks in advance for your opinions!

Hey Amanda, those don't look like Pride of Hankins or Albo leaves (the 2 most common rootstocks) coming out of the base so you may be in luck. I can see where a graft union might be (almost faded away now), but it is not the type of graft that is done by most in Florida although it could be the type Zoe's does (and HVH) for the plants they sell through Home Depot in Florida. Since Zoe's has used a lot of different rootstocks it is possible the leaves at the base are one of those. Even though it is possible I would say it is unlikely that the plant is grafted. The variety and where you got it would also provide info to confirm this.

Good luck with it!

Charles - it's Pride of Acadiana and I got it from Hypnotic Blooms ... the plant was in excellent shape when I got it but I didn't protect it this past winter because in it's location, I thought it would be ok. I was wrong. The other plants I left out have already come back a month ago or so ... but this one is just now putting out those leaves.

Thanks for your advice! I will wait and see what it does then!! :)

Hopefully Robert is around and can tell you whether he would have grafted that one. I think he grows a lot of things on their own roots though.

He does grow a lot on their own roots. I think he's out of town for a week or so and I was hoping he wouldn't see this and get disappointed in me!! ;)

Hi Amanda,
I've been out of town for a while. Ask and you shall receive. It is on its own root and not grafted. If your coming to trade days I'll bring you another.

Robert - this is an old one - not the new one I purchased from you. This is the one I bought last year and I didn't protect it well enough from the winter winds. :( I'm still learning of course. Grr. But thank you for your offer!
