Fairy Doors: Let's See Yours!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Someone in the NE Forum asked to see my fairy door, and it got me thinking that I wanted to see what kind of portal others use! So, let's see 'em!

Here's my door, purchased on eBay I think. I put a few flat stepping stones in front of it, and the mini hostas are 'Mouse Ears'. The iris has to go, it blocks the door - I'm sure the fairies like the privacy, but I want to view the door better!

I have a troll door. It is larger than a fairy door. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/876504/

That is quite the manly door!

That is because trolls are very macho type creatures. But the fairies seem to enjoy him because they hang out there all the time now.

Here's a couple of mine that were made for ornamental toad houses (folks not wanting toads), but can be used for fairy doors instead if they do want toads.

Totally OT but why wouldn't you want toads?

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

dahlianut - because they eat bugs and are cool :o)

I luv toads. We don't have them here sigh and I miss them. It sounds like some people don't want them. I wonder why?

Southwest, VA(Zone 6a)

Some folks just don't like the little guys, some don't have them and don't want other critters living in the houses, so I've been told. Others use the toad houses as fairy houses, so they want doors.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Bev, those are very nice doors! You should market them!

Southwest, VA(Zone 6a)

Sue, I'm thinking hard about it... thanks for your encouragement!

Love all the doors! I love little fat toadies!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Come on, guys! I know there are more of you with fairy/gnome doors! Show me!

I don't have one, I hope others will!

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I don't have any either.

Mission Viejo, CA(Zone 10a)

I'm working on one now - it should be finished in a few days.

I wish I had a fat little toad in my yard too, but they don't seem to live around here. Which is probably a good thing because I understand that they can make your dog really sick if he gets hold of one.

The mature critters seem to know to stay away from the toads, it's the young ones who have to learn the hard way!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

I have some good-sized toads in my yard, and I'm quite pleased with that. Except for the fact that you never know when you might almost step on one, or dig one up or something! But, I'm sure my slug population is down because of them.

Southwest, VA(Zone 6a)

Same here Sue. The first time I dug up a sleeping toad it really startled me! I was so afraid I had hurt the little guy, but he was fine. He scrambled up and hopped a short distance to watch me finish my chores. I talked to him the whole time and he seemed to be paying attention. I guess they're good listeners, lol!

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

(I thought I was the only one who talked to toads . . . )

Southwest, VA(Zone 6a)

Nope, mine seem to sit and listen as long as you talk to them in a soft voice. I think they're amazing little guys. And, I love their little blinking eyes, seem almost human.

Mission Viejo, CA(Zone 10a)

Mine is almost done. It still needs another black wash to darken it a little more, and some tiny hinges and a door handle. I cut out the bark on the tree to recess the door a bit, and planted some moss and baby's tears. It should look better when it's grown in a little more.

Love the pretty blue door!!

Fountain, FL(Zone 8b)

Nice doors. The blue one looks like a cottage door.
I found one at Plow & Hearth's website today under $10.00. It's really cute and has the big black hinges and a window to boot. The also have a fairy rain gauge..not really for the tiny garden but setting it close to one would look good, (I think)

What a pretty gauge!!!

I moved a few plants around in front of my door to make it more "fairy friendly". I took the iris out and moved the mini hostas to the right. Now, in front of the door is Primrose Dark Red Hose-In-Hose. Climber is Creeping Wire Vine, in front of hostas is my "wild" speedwell. Next to that is Primrose 'Gold Lace'. Front right corner is Buxus microphylla 'Kingsville Dwarf'. In back are ferns that I keep in check, and an azalea that's not doing anything.

PrimroseSue, I really like the layout of your mini garden, just beautiful!

Mission Viejo, CA(Zone 10a)

Very beautiful, PrinmroseSue. Is the creeping wire vine going to cover the rock?

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

Actually, Missy, I'd like to buy or make some sort of trellis for it.
