I have a large Grand Duke of Tuscany in a pot in my back garden and a smaller one in the ground in my front garden, both have been flowering. I 2 weird looking black seed things on the top of where the bloom was. They started out green and have now turned black. I can't find any information on PF that they have seeds so I'm not sure what this is.....It had another one at the end of another flower that was green and I squished it and there seemed to be a seed inside some squishy flesh. I figured I'd leave this on the plant to watch what happens.
Here's the flower

Does Jasminum sambac - Grand Duke of Tuscany have seeds?
That does look like a seed pod///actually 2 of them
Look at this site...other Jasminium looks the same

Thanks Shellabella for the link, it certainly does look like the seedpod of Jasminum officinale.....would you happen to know how to plant it? should I wait till it dries up or cracks or falls down,or can I plant it like it is? I would suppose I would need to remove the fleshy part and then just plant the seed. Very exciting by any means as I didn't even know they produced seeds.
Samantha
If it were me I would watch those pods carefully. I would watch for any wrinkling or any signs of the pods drying out. I would then pick them off and get the seed out and plant right away.
You might want to "bag" them with a little netting or Tulle . That way the birds shouldn't get them or if they fall, you still have them.
I imagine the seeds inside would look similar to the ones in the picture on that site. Should be one seed per pod.
LOOK at you Samantha!!! Great job!!! Some folks secure a bit of old pantyhose around them with a pipecleaner or garden velcro etc.
I'll be out there with the netting/pantyhose today.....thank you.....will keep you updated how it all goes.
My Duke has been blooming great for the first year this summer. But I don't have any seed pods. Did you do something special???
Chatnoir, the only thing I can think of is that I have two seperate Grand Duke's, my big one is in my backyard in a pot and then I have a small one in my front yard garden in the ground, both were blooming at the same time. I don't know that I did anything special......other than talk to them :)
I never even knew it was possible to get seeds on the Grand Duke Jasmine
Maybe two is the key. I only have one. Since I have to bring them in over the winter I'm limited to how many I can have. :(
Speaking of blooms...do you think they bloom more prolifically in the sun than in part shade? I bought a pot at HD this week but haven't selected a planting spot yet....
Hmmm its hard to tell robcorreia, the one in my front yard is in light shade under an Oak Tree but its still quite small (although this is the one with the seed pods) my Grand Duke in my backyard is in a huge pot and gets bright shade with afternoon sun, it flowers the most but then again it is huge and its been blooming on and off for the past 3 months, it seems to be almost climbing up an arbor I have it close to.
PF says Sun to Partial Shade so I guess you could try it in a pot first and see how it goes there and if it does ok then plant it. How lucky are you to find it HD, if I found them at HD I would buy them all up, I love it that much. I actually found the local Lowes here had the Arabian Jasmine, full pots for around $7, thats another one of my favorites and I ended up buying 4 of them just incase something happened to them.
When I had J. sambac at my old house, I had it somewhere that it was shaded during the heat of the day but did get morning sun and it bloomed fine. If you want to try it in full sun I'd keep it in the pot at first to see how it does with full sun, that way if the leaves start to get crispy you can move it without having to dig it up.
Mine's in full sun. But I'm zone 5 so I would think that makes a difference. It seems to be really happy. Lots of blooms this year.
Black means ripe seeds! Pick them now. Rub the skin and meat off the seed with a paper towel. Dry at room temp for maybe 2 days, then plant! You might get some new variety from them. If so, you could name it yourself.
This is the first time I've seen/heart that these develop fruit.
my j sambac is in part sun and covered in blooms. I would love to find a grand duke! My cestrum nocturnum is budding as well.
Tops has it in stock: http://toptropicals.com/cgi-bin/garden_catalog/cat.cgi?uid=jasminum_sambac
So does this ebay seller - shipping seems high though unless it's being shipped in pot http://cgi.ebay.com/JASMINE-GRAND-DUKE-2ft-tall-LIVE-PLANT_W0QQitemZ140255388274QQihZ004QQcategoryZ25463QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I've a large Jasmine Sambac Duke of Tuscany which is pretty old. It has Never seeded! Its in full sun and blooms erratically. Perhaps I should pop a few pieces in a semi-shade and see how they do! My large 'bush' flushes with blooms then takes a rest for a while. Beautiful little flower though the perfume is not particularly strong.
Here is a pic of the J.S. Bell of India which is wonderfully fragrant!
This is a shot in the dark! Saw the jasmine flower and seeds on the Top Tropicals site so copied this info from it. Possibility?
Jasminum adenophyllum http://toptropicals.com/cgi-bin/garden_catalog/cat.cgi?uid=Jasminum_adenophyllum
Family: Oleaceae
Bluegrape jasmine, Princess jasmine, Che vang, Lai la co tuyen
Origin: India
A rare endemic in Meghalaya State (India). Spreading fast growing vine with glossy large 2-3" dark green leaves similar to leaves of Jasminum Rex. Flowers are large, 2-3" wide, with narrow curled petels and extremely fragrant. Flower shape resembles Michelia Alba flower. Black-blue berries size of a small grape appear after blooming which attract birds. This species is very hard to find. Can be used il landscape as a fine vine or dense ground cover since is spreads fast and roots when touches the ground
Bedouin your Bell of India looks beautiful. I'll have to put that one on my list.
Sadly "attract birds" is very true.....my berries were eaten by birds or squirrels or something, when I went to go get them last month they were gone, I thought maybe they had fallen but after scrounging around for 1/2 hour I found nothing. Hopefully next year I'll get more.
Have you been successful in rooting from your Grand Duke of Tuscany? I tried one which I gave away....not sure if it lived though I was too scared to check for roots since every time I pulled one up it would die from hitting the air. How do you root yours Bedouin?
Astcgirl, for the most part, I've staked my JS. GDT so its more of a shrub than a bush. However, any ground runners I leave to nature. Every one sends out shoots, roots without any aid and becomes another healthy plant. I imagine in your 9b zone, you could do exactly the same, with success. Some pics I've just taken of the shrub and the rooted plants still attached to the mother plant. First the JS. GDT plant:
2. another GD rooted stem, just behind the #1
Very interesting bedouin, the one in my front yard is in the ground but still small, the large one I have in my backyard is in a pot, maybe I'll have to put it down in the ground so it can send runners. Mine is such a messy plant, I'll have to think hard on where to place it.
Is yours in full sun or some shade?
thanks for the pictures
The GD is in full, blazing hot sun astcgirl! Maybe a little shade will encourage it to bloom more often!
Ahhh Joanmary - I've heard such good things about the scent on that Belle of India - glad to hear you agree - I trust your opinion on fragrance!!!
