I survived my first weekend with my new chickens.. I have to two older reds and they were joined by the 4 banner rocks that are only 2 months old on Saturday morning. I watched as the 4 new arrivals to the ranch stayed huddled together like they were still in the small area they had just come from. The older 2 came out to investigate making noise all the way. I sat and watched them for a long time. Saturday afternoon I checked and my girls Lucy and Wyonoina had given me my first 2 eggs.... The other 4 looked at me like I had lost my mind when I did the happy dance. Sunday my boy came home and I took him to the chicken area, and he was scared at first, but reached up to pet Black Jack and Crazy George, the two roosters, while Little Chicken chased the bugs around the area. The forth hen has yet to be named, she stays hidden under a bush or attached to one of her other buddies, she is the quiet one. He helped me look for the eggs and we got two more and he even petted the chicken I held for him. He was happy to get out of the pen, but did not want to leave the area, he wanted to watch them. So I let him pull up a chair and I finished my chores...
I got 50 pds of scratch and 50 pds of lay crumbles in my front room, what the heck it fits in with the saddle on the floor.. gives it that southwest ranch look.
Thank you all for your wisdom that I have been reading about. I know I have a long way to go but my new partners on the ranch make a nice addition, and they talk to me along with the horses... Its a great way to start a day.
P.S. They make great babysitters for a 2 1/2 year old while I do my chores..
Thank you all for your wisdon
Oh! MissJestr! I am about to take the plunge into chicken ownership! Please post pictures of your new kids! Woudl love to see them!
What are your name considerations for the other hen? Maybe you should host a hen naming contest with a silly prize.
Congratulations on your chickens!
Claire
Now that is what I call the good life. My grandson almost 5 went out this weekend and talked to the chickens for a while until it just got to hot. Kids and farm animals are the way to go. Gratz on your new farm members. AND OH yea on the eggs.
Lucy and Wy were named by the previous owner so I did not change their names. Black Jack and George are named after some Cowboy friends of mine, they strut around like roosters on a saturday night. Little Chicken was named when Billy my boy saw them for the first time, and the other one I am waiting on my grand daughter to come down to name...
I will drag out the camera and get pictures...
I had the most fun reading all about them on this site, and know I will learn alot more cause I will be logging in every day....
Awesome and welcome, and please do come back and share your life with your farm family with us, we love stories and Pictures.
Drag out that camera indeed! We are all waiting impatiently!
Who got wissed on? I couldn't resist.
