I witnessed a BST laying eggs....How long before they hatch?

Westville, IL(Zone 5b)

Today I followed a Black SwallowTail laying eggs on the Parsley and Cillantro....She was all over the place, as I have planted loads of it all over.....I followed her for a good 10 minutes and she was oblivious to me...... How long before I should start looking for Cats to move?....And I guess I should build an enclosure for the soon.....

My swallowtail eggs typically hatch in three days, but most books will tell you to give it a week. Really the only one that ever took that long was the Polydamas. Of course, the insane Florida heat tends to speed things along, LOL!

Do i bring the newly hatched cat inside immediately? or wait? Of all of the plants I watched her hit on....and she bent her tail end in on a good number of them, I have only found 1 white egg.....and it was on the top of a parsley leave...

Thanks Mel

Personally, I bring the eggs in. They can be easier to see than the caterpillars sometimes. Plus, it's fun to watch them hatch!

Hmmmm......that sounds like a plan. How much of the plant do you bring in? And do you have to keep it in water for the leaves, or just let them wilt?

I usually just bring the leaf they're on. They'll eat their egg first so they'll be ok if you don't give them plant food right away. I don't usually put my plants in water because I'm lazy and I'm afraid my cats might accidentally drown themselves.

What do you keep yours in? I have a screened in porch that is adjacent to the butterfly garden....

Oh, I put them in critter keepers (like they sell at the pet store to keep crickets in) or I use Gladware containers.
