Whats your favorite carefree plant ??

Ellenboro, NC(Zone 7b)

I would just like to know what everyones favorites are!! mine are Zebrina Malva, I can not seem to go wrong with that stuff and it never seems to stop blooming, sometimes the heat gets to it, but then it seems to come out of its rough period and starts all over again!! this is just 1 of the many I could list as my favorites, there are probably 20 I think are great!

My number one favorite carefree plant is Salvia 'Indigo Spires'. It starts fairly early and blooms till frost with no deadheading. Pretty drought tolerant once established too.

Well, this is an annual, and a common one at that, but my all-time favorite carefree plant is any Wave petunia ('Wave' is the brand name under which the cultivar is marketed--do not know what the true cultivar name is...). No deadheading, gorgeous color, easy to grow.

On the perennial side, I'd have to choose pretty much any cultivar of any Salvia.........love them all!

i like lots of plants.one that is going now is my siam tulips(curcuma alismatifolia).

Lavander but its spreading and taking over my whole flower garden.Love the scent, the flowers and it will survive just about anything.

I'm with Diehrd on the Siam Tulips. The way mine have come back this year - I think I can consider them "carefree". Beautiful and they bloom all summer.

On the other hand, Salvia greggii - of any variety - is the most amazing thing. Rain/drought, it doesn't care.

Gaura - hands down

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Agastache 'Salmon and Gold' thrives for me with little care or water. The bees and the hummers love it.

Lavina, I would love to walk through your garden; all that lavender sounds wonderful. It is too hot and humid down here for lavender to actually thrive; it lives and looks pretty for a while then it melts.

Hmmmm. Carefree plants. That's pretty much anything over a year old in my yard. They get some basic care but not much more.

Core: You are such a show-off! LOL.

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

nah he's just busy chasing the kids so he has to have low maintenance plants ...been boating lately Core?

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

No boating. Some kayaking. My free time is restricted for the moment. LOL. The oldest one is off to school this fall, add a few activities and he'll be out of my hair for a while. Not to sound mean but kids are fine, you just don't need to spend 24 hours a day with them. He's swimmimg too so I don't need to keep a constant watch over him. Lots water around or near my house which doesn't sound like a problem but it is with multiple kids who can't swim.

hey rednyr:-) Does your gaura get aphids? I've tried it several times and the aphids looooved it..I loved it, too...but the aphids won the battle on that one sad to say.
Planted it all yet?

Seabrook, SC(Zone 8b)

I'm with you Bev, Gaura is cute, but too buggy for me. Mine kept getting all these tiny little beetles that looked like mini japanese beetles. Zillions of them. Bye bye. I'm too lazy for that!

I think my favorite is rudbeckia triloba aka Brown Eyed Susan. I pulled out about 80% of mine last year and I still have tons. It's just a happy, long blooming plant that merrily reseeds but is easy to control. This pic is from this morning. If I want some in another part of the yard I just dead head the blooms in that area. And I love that it starts blooming when everything else is starting to have issues with the heat.

That's why I like vinca. Reseeder with no care required. Loves heat and doesn't need much water.

Kure Beach, NC(Zone 9a)

I have two - Mexican Bird of Paradise (Caesalpinia mexicana) and Sweet Almond Bush, (Aloysia virgata).

Sumter, SC(Zone 8a)

bev - nope never had a problem (oh gosh now I will darn) with aphids on my Gaura...I have over a dozen of them and they are my little ray of sunshine dancing on the winds...lol

Garner, NC(Zone 7b)

I am jealous (again) , lol! I love those things, but ohhhh, the bugs!

Selma, NC(Zone 7b)

I currently have one of the regular white gauras that a friend grew from seed. It gets zero attention from me and is just fine. Probably plenty of good bugs in that little bed though 'cause its a jungle of aster and mum foliage.

Johns Island, SC

I'm playing with that Aloysia virgata this year, Beach Barbie...so far so good. I like it's wild woodsy growth habit, and the smell is intriguing!

Grantsboro, NC(Zone 8b)

Guess I should fess up Coleus is my favorite plant and this year they have not gotten any attention from me and I have around 50 or so.
2nd favorite is mints
3rd is basil
can I go on and on

Lavina

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Yes you can.....

How do you keep yur mints in check?

Grantsboro, NC(Zone 8b)

I have them in huge cement pots at different places not close to each other so they don't mix. and mow around the pots.
