I am asked to post on this forum

I have a cactus that a lady from Taiwan gave me. She gave me a big heavy leaf for two pots. I never got them in the ground as she suggested with a lot of support. Now one of the pots is going to bloom. She is so heavy I have to rest the bloom up on a big clay pot.

I have lots of epi baskets but have never seen leaves this thick and heavy.

I saw a picture of hers planted in the ground and the flowers were about 2 feet across. Obviously this bloom won't be that big.

Hi ya Gail,

Nice Epi! I have no clue which one it is because I am a novice Epi grower and only have one very old large E. hookeri and some smaller noids from cuttings rec'd in trades that weren't labeled. I can't wait to see the bloom on that one when it opens! I bet as soon as your bloom opens someone will be able to ID it for you!

Hiya Gail,
You have a Hylocereus! Yes, these can be massive plants. These are the cacti that commercial growers get Dragon Fruit from. I can't tell you what species you have just from this photo as the plant is too small and immature. The flower will certainly help - take measurements of it;s length and width and a couple of good photos from the front and side on. Here is a link to all the Hylocereus in DG: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/adv_search.php?searcher%5Bcommon%5D=&searcher%5Bfamily%5D=&searcher%5Bgenus%5D=Hylocereus&searcher%5Bspecies%5D=&searcher%5Bcultivar%5D=&searcher%5Bhybridizer%5D=&search_prefs%5Bblank_cultivar%5D=&search_prefs%5Bsort_by%5D=rating&images_prefs=both&Search=Search
Also, here is a link to a great site for Dragon Fruit information: http://www.tropicalfruitnursery.com/dragon/index.htm These are cool plants indeed - I think they are like Epiphyllums on steroids!

Ciao, KK.

Edited to fix an error - I need to remember to use the PREVIEW button first!

gess...I have a passle of those growing in pots around here but have never had any blooms, I guess it's just too dry here. Be sure to post pics when it blooms...

The storm winds and rain knocked the bloom open to white but it is limp and ugly. Oh well, there will be more blooms. The ASian lady told me it was so hot this summer she only got 3 big blooms whereas most summers she gets 10 to 15 blooms.
