What can still be planted?

Seattle, WA

A friend has invited me to help "do something" with a large back yard. It is west-facing, surrounded by the biggest shrubs I have ever seen (15 tall at least) with several even-shadier nooks and crannies. They (she has housemates) have a few cherry tomato plants going in one small bed by the patio, and another bed by a concrete-block wall was a garden last year, and has lain fallow so far this year. There is one other well-worked-over piece of ground where a picnic table now stands.

I'm going over this next Sunday to get as much garden bed ready as we have energy for, and plant some stuff. I have some idea of what, based on what I was going to plant myself over the next couple of weeks: kale, chard, beets, maybe some carrots.

Since I have open space to play with, I'd like to know if it's too late to plant some peas and beans? Is it too late to get flowers this year if I plant calendula and nasturtium seed?

Not too late for calendula and nasturtium, I don't think. Don't know about the peas and beans, though.

Sounds like fun!!

Peas can be sown now for Fall harvest. Beans - a short season variety might get you beans by the end of September & into October, providing the weather stays warm.
Lettuces, beets, radishes, carrots, broccoli & all the cole crops can be sown. Just keep them happy & well-watered if we have any hot weather. IF!!!
Anything that can grow in about 60 days will do just fine, unless Winter happens in September...
