I hatched a guinea!!

Paris, TN

I hatched a guinea only this keet is 2 weeks before due date! It seems to be doing fine I tried to give it sugar water but it didnt drink . What a suprise I went to turn the eggs and there it was! Now I feel I am not prepared to care for the newborn. I have it in the brooder with the light food and water but no siblings will this lonely keet do ok on its own

maybe you could put a rolled up sock in with him.... i have raised individuals before, he will be OK. maybe more will hatch?

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

I did that with a chick I had in the "hospital brooder" put a rolled up sock, did good. This chick had major feet problems, the claws were backwards. this little thing was walking around on his ankle, do they have ankles?

Our first chicken sevearal yr.s ago was raised single in incubator by my neighbor, she talked us into taking it because the others pecked at it. BAD MIStAKE !We went to lots of trouble and exspense for one little bantam hen .We learned 'what comes first' the facilities or the chicken .

I had to be gone all day today but got home and the keet is still kicking It did drink some water but wont peck at anything to eat. I did put a ball of fuzzy yarn my daughter was knitting on in there and it cuddles up to that. I am so excited for the others to get here!

try a boiled egg yolk that will tempt him! sometimes they don't eat for 2 days... just looking forward to the rest of them!

well I figured out how this one hatched so early. My son had some eggs in our small incubator and moved them to the big incubator when we got it so thats why this keet was 2 weeks early. I fed it some egg last night and it gobled it up.

You are on your way!

I think there is something wrong with the keets foot when it walks the one foot is turned sideways its only been walking for a day so is it because its a new walker or a potential deformity

Guineas are the most fun of all my poultry (opinion) and if they're all you have ... they'll be enough.

is it just a bent toe or is it the whole leg

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

it might have an upper leg injury/strain. what type of surface do you have it on...?

edited to add this link: http://www.guineafowl.com/fritsfarm/guineas/problems/

maybe something you can do now to straighten out his leg...

well at first it was on paper towels then we put a dish towel in there and that seemed to help but it still stumbles even though it is getting around good. it's like his toed are folded under his foot if that makes any sense and I can staighten them but they go back folded under when he walks I'll try to get a pic of it

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

the linki gave has a diagram and description to make him shoes. do it now so you can get it straightened out before ht bones fully form...

His curled up toes need splints. I've seen-read of folks using super glue to attach toothpicks of the precise length to the bad toes. They eventually fall off and by then ... the feet are normal. Whatever works !

the chicken shoe tamara talked about sounded pretty good

My baby keet died last night it was so vibrant all day then by night it was lethargic and could barely stand. I don't know what I did wrong. I am so sad.

awwwwwwwwww I am so sorry.

Paris, TN

Thank you the rest are supposed to hatch end of next week hope I have a good turnout I can't tell about the whole candeling thing just not good at it I guess

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

Hope all goes well with them.

fieldsems, you may not have done anything wrong at all. Sometimes babies die for no apparent reason. They just do.

GG

We could speculate on the reasons forever and not get any answers.

One of my month old Barnevelder roos died the only night I was away from home. I have no idea why--and no other animals have gotten sick. Granny is right, sometimes it just happens....But you let it have the best life it could, however short.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

what date are the others due?

Moxee, WA(Zone 4a)

fieldsems,

since you have a bunch eggs in the incubator to look forward to ... just be patient ...they'll hatch and you'll have your hands full and heart warmed.

Be sure to let us know when they hatch.

the silkies are due next tuesday and the guineas are due next saterday thanks for all your support

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

keep us up to date on them.

my incubator has an odor again but this time when I sniffed the eggs they all smell! great I guess I will have to tough it out for a few more days since we are so close to hatch time I don't want to risk throwing out a healthy egg. I never saw veins when I candled my eggs just a mass with an airspace although I do have 2 silkie eggs that I am pretty sure have blood rings in them and they don't have the mass that the others have but they don't smell like the guinea eggs do

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

maybe it is just getting close to time. I am totally guessing here.

Paris, TN

well I figured out where the smell was coming from I went to turn the eggs and found one cracked and starting to weep I took it out and curiosity got the better of me and I tried to open the egg It exploded in my hand totally nasty!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

ewwwwwwwwwwww oh bless you.

number one rule never open a weaping egg throw it as far as u can and watch it explode when it hits the ground
