I finally had Snickers tested for allergies so I can try to make her more comfortable. The test results came back and she is allergic to 20 different things. Almost all the grasses that grow in the area, dog fennel, dandelion, wool and too many to name. When I get the vials for her injections they will have to divide them into two different ones as they can't fit them all into one. So I guess she will have to have two a day and I will give those at home.
Hopefully it will make her less itchy and she can enjoy her life.
It is expensive, but I told the Vet in the long run, I will probably be spending just as much with trips to the office for ear infections and other meds, so will just do it this way and see if it helps.
I talked to a Receptionist there that I know pretty well and she had a dog on this for 10 years and said it did well and controlled the allergy symptoms. I just want to make Snickers have a good life since she stayed at her previous owners side throughout her extended illness until she went into a coma and died. When I first got her she was always trying to return to bed after going out in the morning. It took her quite a while to realise that I didn't stay in bed all the time as she was used to.
I think she deserves a quality life after all she went through before I got her. After her owner died she and another companion dog ended up at the Vet's to be adopted. I couldn't take both of them, but later heard that the male was eventually adopted also to a good home.
She was far worse when I got her and had a lot of thin and missing hair. I am sure the family had worries of their own with an invalid in the house. When I heard her story, I just had to adopt her as I know the woman who died probably worried about what would happen to them after she died.So many loyal pets just end up homeless when these things happen and just don't understand why they are going through the change in their life.
I hope if something would ever happen to me that my pets would find a loving home.
