Once, as a kid, I had a brownish wormy thingy on me whilst swimming in a river which my uncle promptly pulled off me and said was a leach but it hadn't done any serious sucking so there wasn't any blood. It scared me so much I never went back into a river or lake after that until I was in my 20's-very ugly!

They come in with plants, etc. I have them in my contained ponds (not natural lake ponds) so anyone can get them. They never seem to get bigger than an inch or so, so I'm assuming they arent the lake variety that get bigger. I also have never had one attach to me while in the pond arranging plants, etc. I've also never seen one on any of my fish. I thought when I did the parasite treatment that it would kill them, but it didn't. They don't seem to bother anything anyway, so I don't worry about them.
