I bought ducks from someone who can't speak english, I was sent there by a feed store.
We went there to get chickens, and saw two baby ducklings in with a peking duck so we thought the pekings were black when young, like swans 'wrong '! We bought two of them ,they did change color . They are now metalic green, blue ,white spots on breast and brown speckles .Not friendly but will eat out of hand.
We let them out to roam and they flew away for awhile, but came back. They can fly like any wild duck . Have very large wing span . Wonder if they will hang around or leave ? Also worry if they decide to try out our pool if chlorine will hurt them ? They flew right over the pool a couple times .
My Mystery Ducks are FLYING !
well chlorine dosent bother the wild ducks in my area one of them even layed an egg in there once
I suppose it might dry out their skin a bit and not be good to drink excessively. It always turns my hair green--I wonder what it would do to a white duck?
maybe turn it purple? Just a thought, and being facetious. LOL

lol dose it realy turn your hair green i have never heard of that
Well it used to---when I was blond.
so do u think chlorine would be bad catscan
light chlorinazation would not be harmful if there are other water sources nearby. If there is too much chlorine in the water the duck won't drink it, but may still wash and play in it. Ducks in swimming pools are a big problem around here. I can't tell you how many rescue calls I have gone out on to move some dopy hen and her ducklings.
LOL,,,, they still sound liek muscuvies to me.... wait till they get that red knob thing going on...
Hello everyone. Sorry i just got back to you. I have been spending way too much time on a medical forum to get info on my new illness, plus reading everything I can.Getting old is no fun but better than alternative, haha.
We are trying to build a covered cage too for the chics and ducks .We are using old cow fence for top that we kept putting off taking to the dump .
Tamamra your probably right because the red thing is starting to come out on their face and eye area.
My chics ended up being 3 roos and 2 hens .They may be fighting cocks the way they fight all the time .
I wish I could show pictures but with my webtv i can't. And depending on one of my kids or grown grandkids is a joke ,they all live hundreds of miles away which doesn't help much .
Good 'talking' to all of you again .
sure! you learn real fast how to take care of yourself so you can keep taking care of those pets!

Pets are surviving us so far,it's the other animals that keep killing or maiming them, haha. . Covered pen is 80% done now . I will be so glad to see the ducks in a larger area ,so they can run free like the chics. I don't want them flying off though until I think they may want to come back .They are getting more friendly everyday. We started holding them and they went nuts ! Now they don't act so afraid when we we touch them . Not happy about it, but less afraid.
I don't like taking medicine unless i absolutely have to , so it's hard to figure out if the cure or treatment is worse than the illness .That takes a lot of time .
if they are like my muscovies, they may fly away in the evnreing to forage a bit... i love when they take off, fly a circle, then come in for a landing. the females are smaller and learn to fly sooner...
tell us when it is finished
I think you should post a picture of these odd ducks. My muscovie 'Bob' leaned how to fly when she was around 5 or 6 months old. She rarely flys now...but when she did, she always came home. Since you live much closer to where they are native then I...they might be more likely to go off and nest somewhere. I blame Bob on returning on the fact that we have no wild muscovies for her to mate with. :)
Our biggest concern is the owls here . They are huge ! One got my 18lb. cat and we never saw the cat again. Also he got our favorite goldfish from our pond we had for 6 years, flew down right in front of us sitting next to pond and grabbed it . We put fishing line around the pond , he flew into it one time got tangled and never bothered the fish again .I'm afraid the owls may get our ducks if we let them go in the evenings .We want more cats, but think the owl family here may get them too .
Makes you want to put little electric stun jackets on the cats, whatsup! Maybe you could put out electrified cat and chicken decoys and blast those owls into behaving themselves!
Mcamdon , I can't post pictures, I don't have the system ,or don't know how .I can send a picture from cell phone to a web site .None of my kids or grandkids want to join DG or they could do it for me ,they all live in the suburbs of Houston and Atlanta so no need to join.
Catscan, we need to do something .No sense in letting a few owls rule over our animals .We hear them in the woods all the time .We see them too sometimes .I had that old cat for 14 yr.s and he was very special .The smartest cat I ever seen. But would not stay inside .Everytime I hear that owl it makes me sick ,where before I use to enjoy the hooting sounds of them .
mcamden what would you do if bob went broody in your house would you let her sit??
bob was broody at one point, with no fertile eggs.... can't remember what she did?
oh i must of misted that
Yeah...at first we were taking Bobs eggs, and baking with them. my Gma raised muscovies, and she always baked with their eggs. We had to build him a box in the coop so he could have some privacy from all the young hens who would get under him to see what was coming out! After a while he quit letting us take the eggs, and got very defencive. Since we dont have a male, they werent fertilized...by a duck anyway. The rooster was fertilizing them. He stopped when Bob FINALLY quit laying after two months! Now we have not had an egg from him/her in a couple weeks.
McCamden did you say the rooster was breeding with the duck ?
is that possible
