Hi,
Does anyone have: Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea 'Crimson Pygmy' - Barberry, 'Crimson Pygmy' ?
I would dearly love some seeds from these plants . . . I have seeds for just about everything I think, that I can trade for seeds.
I also have LOTS of baby Veronica Sunny Border Blue I could trade.
I know there is a seed trading forum, but I thought I would ask my NE Forum buddies as well.
Cheers
Michaela
Looking for Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea 'Crimson
Michaela, I have one. I went to look at it if there are any seeds. I know it has tiny flowers in the spring. There are some very sparse small red berry type of fruit. I could collect a few for you but I have never seen any babies sprout up from this shrub. I don't know if it is sterile or not. I also found a large wasp nest at the base of it, well sort of tucked under the lower branches and unfortunately they found me a few seconds before I noticed them. As I turned to get a better distance from them one got me on the ankle. This has not been my year where bees are concerned. That makes three times they have got me. The little berries don't look ripe yet but I think in a few weeks they will be, whether or not there are seeds inside I don't know. At any rate I think A nice cool evening would be better to investigate more.
Found some info, it does look like you can propagate from seed but cannot guaranty the size of the new plant will be a dwarf. I can send you some of the little berries now if you would like, send d-mail if you want them. I will try the far side of the shrub this time. :)

The full sized one is I know, but I don't think the dwarf is invasive and thought it was not on the list. It does not produce very many seeds and like I said I have never seen a baby grow anywhere here since I have had this shrub, maybe 8 years now. I would not want the Environmental Police to come after me so maybe sending the seeds is not a good idea. Not to mention the bee danger in trying to get a few. LOL.
Well, it may be forbidden, but I do see them in landscapes everywhere. ^_^
Apparently, selling them is a problem - but owing one is not. And the propagation ban doesn't take effect until Jan. 2009 - so I am still in compliance with the law.
Thanks for the warning, Victor.
