I transplanted a wild blackberry out of my lawn two years ago and I think I'm going to get berries this year!
Wild Blackberries!
That's great! I am a lover of wild blackberries.. We haven't had enough here to fill up gallon buckets, so I just stand there and pop them into my mouth.. Oh YUM!
I was surprised with all the rain we got here this year that we didn't have the most abundant crop ever.. no late frosts , etc.. The only thing I can figure out is some of the hard hard rain knocked some of the blooms off...
Where did you put it? you said you transplanted it out of your lawn.. Do you have it in your garden or orchard area?
Good deal, Zhinu!
Most of the wild berries around here are wild black raspberries. I've been thinking to transplant enough to fill a 100' row along one fence line. It's only the prep work for that area that prevents me...
I don't think I choose well. It's up in a raised bed in full shade. I didn't think about its needs when I planted it, just seeing if I could keep it alive. I'd replant it, but I'm afraid at this it would make the shift. I have another one in the lawn (I think it's a bit more bulky it might be a domestic) that I'm thinking about. Where would be ideal for planting it?
I would plant them in full sun. I haven't planted domestics, but I think they would take the same conditions.
I have picked wild blackberries for 60 yrs. and always found the largest juciest berries growing in partial shade.
RED
YES!!! I've always found the 'shade berries' the biggest and best! I hadn't remembered that when considering my transplant idea...
I always seem to find them at the edge of standard black berries.
There are berries, but they're only one kernel. Has anyone else seen this? I'll get a pic tomorrow.
We have blackberries everywhere and yes, absolutely, the ones in the shade are much better, juicier!
Darius, wild BLACK RASPberries? I'm jealous! Black raspberries are like gold. The berries here are mostly non-native Himalayans. Earlier in the season, I could pick a gallon an hour. Now it takes longer and the juice is drying up.
They take over everything. There is an old single story house on the property that has disappeared under them and just last spring the house was there.
We have the same problem up here, which is why I decided to "shepherd" it.
Just got back from a trip to Oregon and I couldn't believe the blackberries.. Incredible! I could tell that to most people they had become a pesky plant.
