anyone know?

I am referring to the green guy:

I think that is a dragonfly nymph. They hatch on plants and then spend 2 years in the water before adulthood when they fly away. BEV

It is indeed a dragonly nymph and something you definately want to keep around. The will eat various pests both in the pond as babies and out of it as adults. The adults are wonderful to watch.

ah...of course! :0)...now I see the resemblance. :0)

We usually have tons of dragonflies around here. We have a small creek at the back of our property. That is where they must be coming from. They do quick fly-by dips in our pool and drink the water.(it is salt, not chlorine).

I'll add this little nymph in to the water feature, with the rest of the pond stuff then, and thank you so much for the ID

I know it is not much of a "pond". It was a garage sale find. I'm calling it my "starter kit" :0)

Here is anohter creature...(on the far right)

Some kind of prawn/shrimp/bottom feeder guy? There are tons of teensy tiny ones that came in a scoop of frogs bit, from my local nursery. (Same place the nymph came from).:0)
thank you

I dunno what the second one is T, but the first is a damselfly nymph, dragonfly nymphs are much creepier and quite a bit bulkier.

Thank you.

I'm a bit bummed...just found out that three of the species that I have in there are illegal in my state.

Had to destroy them :0(...and of course, they were the ones I liked the most...*sigh

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

No! Are you kidding? that is sad :( I love my dragon and damsel flies.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

I was referring to the plants, ...not the critters.

:0)

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

oh, still, that stinks, too.

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

..it sure does...

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

No kidding! Illegal in contained areas as well? bummer.

I felt like I was in a biology class there for a minute, looking at slides in the microscope!

I can't believe that dragonflies spend TWO YEARS in the water. WOW.

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

Yeah, I've seen some huge nymphs...they give me the heebie jeebies :( And they bite, nasty critters. here's a terrible pic of one I had bagged up for a friend.

lol

seedpicker ,

The Pistia stratiotes - water lettuce , the Eichhornia azurea - water hyacinth would be two out of the three . What was the third banned plant ?

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

four, actually...duckweed, and water fern were the other two...

The only things I could keep were the frogs bit, and horsetail ;0(

Dolores, CO(Zone 5b)

Illegal, well, yes, if you expect the pond police to pop in anytime soon! Did you really destroy them? Ya know, here in AZ some say morning glories are "illegal"... I have yet to see the MG police come by.

Brenda, also hoping the "no burn day" police don't show up next time we have a fire in our fireplace on the wrong day...

(Taylor) Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, Brenda you may as well throw in some poppies into this discussion, lol...

We either have one bad apple, or my entire nighborhood is filled with tattle-tails...either way ya gotta kinda watch your back on our block.

People over the years have told me all sorts of things, and I even remember my first year here(18yrs ago) that I got a notice on my front door, for my lawn being too long. The police apologized to me, but said he had to issue a warning citation to me because a neighbor had complained.

There are a ton of little incidents like this, and it has been a bit annoying over the years, but not enough to move. lol...

I called the police department once, because I had seen poppies growing in the "wildflower mix" that the city had planted in the public highway median. (I had always wanted to ask, and now figured it was safe to ask about a public garden, rather than incriminate myself by asking if I, personally, could plant poppies). He told me that poppies are "on the books"(the law), but only enforced if the pods are scratched. If they see an oozing pod, you are in BIG trouble, but otherwise, you can plant away...

The pond plants aren't worth a snooty, nosey little tattle-tail neighbor getting their kicks off calling me out, and causing a hefty fine, or jail time, lol..., so just got rid of them. I'll just have to find other pond plants I like, and enjoy those others, vicariously through this forum. :0)

Dolores, CO(Zone 5b)

Oh, so sorry about that, seedpicker. Well, there are lots of other good pond plants, and many "regular" plants that can be grown in the pond (as I'm learning from everyone here). I planted some ruellia in my pond, and it's doing great (and is also the only place I can keep it under control, LOL!)... many cannas, in cooler climates hostas, etc. Share with us what you have (legal) success with!!

Brenda
