Does Birds Eat Milo or Is It A Filler???

Wauseon, OH(Zone 5a)

I would like to know if birds eat Milo or is it a Filler?

What else do they put in Bird Feed that is a Filler, that bird do not eat?

Any Filler is a wast of good Money that birds do not eat.

How many of you buy feed and mix your own? What do you buy if you mix your own bird feed?

I'm pretty sure Doves eat it, but I try to find seed without Milo included, since a lot of birds will simply toss it from the feeder.

I second gardenpom's answer.

I like black oil sunflower seeds and cracked sunflower hearts. During the winter I add other seeds especially for winter birds, like thistle for the Goldfinches.

I mix birdseed that has peanunts and dried fruit mixed in it (walmart) with cracked corn and black oil sunflower seeds. sort of a "something for everyone" approach for the three main feeders in summer.

In winter the corn goes on the ground and I add safflower and sunflower hearts to that blend and one feeder is 50/50 s & s hearts. I have other feeders for the nijer and suet and sugar water and I spread peanut butter on the bark of the trees nearby.

I think somebirdie is eating the Milo. I don't know who, but I never have found the feeder emptied of all of the seeds but it.

I was just on the Duncraft site, and was surprised to learn that their choice as the favorite food of Painted Buntings and Indigo Buntings is White Proso Millet. I'll have to try some of that this winter.

So that's who it is! I've got 2 big familys of Indigo here in my patch of woods and lawns.

I know that the squirrels don't favor the Milo, sometimes I have chased them off to find that is the only thing left in the bottom of the feeder they just emptied. Or maybe their hands can't pick it up very well.

There are several milo plants that are going to seed in my yard. The House Finch began eating from them yesterday and the Towhee around here like milo too.

I've found it best to have different feeders for different seeds instead of mixing all the seed together. I get a lot of chickadees and they'll just throw everything on the ground to get to the sunflower seeds. Or do specific mixes of seeds (like sunflower and peanuts are ok for my chickadees, but for me corn ends up on the ground).

Good to know some birds like the milo, they are just ones I never get. So I guess it all depends on the type of birds you get visiting on what to include in the buffet!

My main feeder is layered with black oil sunflower and nut and berry mix. My box feeder has a mix of black oil sunflower, nut and berry , peanuts in the shell, and a whole dryed corn stuck on the screw in the middle. Same for my platforms minus the corn. I also have two thislte feeders with the fancy mix of thistle and sunflower chips. The finches seem to prefer that blend now. And in season the nectar for the hummers. Come winter I add suet and peanut butter stuck in holes in the trees. Not too spoiled are they? GM :)

Dover AFB, DE(Zone 7a)

Oh no! I don't think they are spoiled at all!

I thought that doves were the only ones that ate milo, but I have been surprised to observe that Towhees eat it at our house as their first choice!
