My 17 year old cat Chauncey had to be rushed to the emergency room last night. It all happened so quickly.
As I looked at his records it was last year at this time he became ill also.
I noticed he was missing from his usual spot on the recliner and remarked to my husband that something must be wrong. That was the only indication I had.
I waited until about 4 o clock and went looking for him. I had to get a flashlight when I couldn't find him easily. He was under my bed, so I coaxed him out.
He was breathing heavy, but I thought maybe it was hairball trouble so petted him a while and then left him to relax.
About 8 o clock I went into the bedroom and found him leaving the litter box and gasping.
I started to massage his chest as he seemed to be choking. He threw up a whole lot of phlegm, but still could not breathe right.
I called the emergency Vet and told them we would be bringing him in. He did get oxygen and a steroid shot and something relating to asthma treatment.
They said the prognosis for his age was very poor and said they did not think he would make it through the night. We decided to let him go as I couldn't imagine what it felt like to not be able to breathe and to be suffocating in his phlegm.
So we said our goodbyes and went home without him. So sad. The last time we took a pet there it was the same ending. They are really good caring Vets, just that it was our pet's time to go.
I hope there is not a new virus going around in the feline family.
After we left all I could think about was how he got up and pulled himself together enough to use the litterbox for heaven's sake. He barely could breathe and there he was coming out of the box, sigh.
Here is a picture of him but I couldn't bear to show his beautiful eyes.
Chauncey is at the rainbow bridge
