Whats the difference between direct drive pumps and magnetic pumps?
My pond is 6ft wide and averages 2 1/2 ft deep. It is round. How do I figure how many gallons I have and what size pump I would need?
Also I plan on putting the pump at the lowest part of the pond, a little over 3 feet. Most pumps I have noticed have a prescreen filter ? Just how does one clean this? Does it have to be cleaned often?
I just don't know anything about pumps. Any advice is appreciated.

As far as particular pump brands, more experienced people than I will have to assist you with that. I just put in what the local Home Depot had in stock and have been pretty happy with it. Could not even tell you what kind it is.
As far as cleaning the filter is concerned, whatever pump you purchase will have instructions with it. Mine has a plastic cover on the bottom with a lot of small holes in it. I just pic it up from time to time and pull any debris off the bottom. If it looks really clogged I have unscrewed it and rinsed it off with a garden hose.
