Has any heard if the Garden Conservancy's Open Days tour also benefiting the JC Raulston Arboretum is happening again this fall in Raleigh? The last couple of years have been really great - there is something for everyone - plants. art, design. Is Helen Yoest still running it?

Thanks, Missingrosie!
I see from this Raleigh is the weekend before. What is Hillsborought tour like? Is it every other year...2009? Do you know when it is?
No - I learned about it from your post. I thought I'd go in search of the dates to help you out. But I know there are some great gardens in Orange county. Not sure about Hillsborough specifically. And, Hillsborough is growing - so you may just like the trip for a lunch etc. A 'from scratch' french bakery... chocolate croissants...I hear there may be a rail planned for Hillsborough -- we have a great farmers market that has been stable for many years ..and ...have you had a Locopop???? Whoo Hoo - great flavors - like you have never tasted!!
OK Rosie, what's a locopop? I neeeed to know.
Well, it started as a small ice-pop store (small shack really) - this gal in Durham heard about these frozen 'ices' that her mexican neighbors used to eat in mexico. They told her about these frozen treats on a stick and how to make. So she did...sold them well right off ... and now she has 1 shop in Chapel Hill - University Courtyard off of Franklin, one in Durham on Hillsborough Road near 9th Street (near Duke) and one in downtown Hillsborough (that is all I know about) But the flavors are crazy!! Mint, basil, I had a pineapple/chile. It was very pure pineapple --and it was 'fire' too! I bit it..hated it...bit it - loved it... choked..burned and loved it again! I also tried a honeydew/lime... it was great.. there is a chocolate/mexican, lavender/rose, etc. etc. She also sells creamy pops like thicker more like ice cream --chocolate with rice milk, and some other cream based flavors. $2.00 each. Honestly may sound awful - but these things sell very well and they are really good. Anyway, we have a Locopop in Hillsborough - and a yarn shop, few new restaurants, and adding more. Newly opened Weaver Street Market Co-op, "last Fridays" through the summer with bands and street crafts, wine bars --so it is really growing in ole historic Hillsborough where nothing typically ever changes!
Ok, I went to Helen Yoest's website www.gardengardens.com and accessed her blog - the Philbrook family diary. She has a writeup about each of the gardens with a photo. I was surprised (and happy) to see Denny Werner, Director of the JC Raulston Arborteum will open his garden. It looks like another good tour with something for everyone. I am particularly interesed Dr. Werner's garden since I am a wildlife gardener.
Ooops, I typed in the wrong link...it is www.gardensgardens.com
Well I want to know what happened to Bob Lyons who used to be in Raleigh?
Lavina
Bob is now Program Director for the Longwood Graduate Program in Public Horticulture and Professor of Landscape Horticulture at the University of Delaware.
Thanks, I wondered what happened to him. I had a lot of plants and shared them with him then bam, he was gone.
I moved from Raleigh this past Dec. and miss the pot give away at the college recycle program. Guess you know about it. If not check with them as you can get pots of all shapes and sizes free if you can beat the nurserys in getting there.
I still have approx 200 1 gal pots to fill up . I need some bigger sizes.
Lavina
No, I don't know about the program. When is it held or do you just stop by?
They announce it on Craig's list and its only 1 day a year.
You can also call and ask if they know when they are doing it this year. I don't know the number but its the recycleing dept.
