I have a hummingbird feeder outside our kitchen window - it's the type that takes test-tubes. It seems to me that birds let me know when it is empty by hovering by the window to catch my attention. Is this fanciful imagination on my part or do others have a similar experience?
Hummingbird intelligence?
My feeders hang out on my front porch. When I stick my head out the door and check on them, if they are empty, all the hummers will hover around looking at me like, "Where's the chow?" When I walk out to get them to refill, they just fly into the nearest trees and sit there waiting for me to bring them back. I don't even get half way back to my door before they're all over their freshly refilled feeders. They are fearless little jokers.
Mine let me know when they are empty by doing there little hovering dance and chirping like crazy at me. They are so smart, and yes...fearless little jokers LOL
I have one that seems to be the most "vocal" and most territorial. His/her name is "birdzilla" LOL
Artgal - Absolutely!! My feeders are not right by my kitchen window - they're about 15' away, around a corner, but the hummers still have been known to hover in front of the window by the sink to let me know "Hey, Lady - we're out of juice out here!" LOL!! For being SO tiny, they surely have the biggest "personalities" (or is that bird-alities?) They just keep me in stitches! Samantha
I have been wondering the same thing! I have them hover right at my sunroom window where I'm sitting as if they are trying to get my attention.. They are so smart to know the big human puts the good stuff in the hanging jar.
