Micro Miniature Roses

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I came across some roses that grow indoors >6" tall, and I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find them in Canada. I found a few sites offering them in the US, but can't find a Canadian vendor. :( Thanks in advance!

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I usually see those in pots in grocery stores or Canadian Tire in the spring. They have 4 or 6 plants in a pot depending on the size of the pot. They can be grown inside, but I generally separate the plants and put them outside where they've proven to be quite hardy although something has eaten most of the foliage this year.

Ditto - same source, same problem this year with eaten foliage. Although I'm seeing them in the grocery stores right now.

I got mine earlier this year at Walmart, they were left over from Valentines Day. Six pots of them are planted in a little hedge row beside the patio, and are in bloom now. Beautiful yellow/orange!

They love alfalfa tea.

Rosemont, ON(Zone 4a)

I'm another Valentines Day markdown shopper. I bought a bright red mini-rose, reduced to $1 at the supermarket. It hated being indoors - went all limp twigged and was a magnet for white fly - so I planted it in outside, at the northwest corner of the house, thinking I'd get a few months of bloom and then winter would kill it. Wouldn't you know, 3 years later it's still where I planted it, still mini and blooming like crazy every year. It escaped the phantom leaf eaters this year, but a couple of full-size roses have been stripped - is it earwigs, or what?

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I popped into Canadian Tire to see what they had left and cheap at their garden centre and they had the roses too.

The earwigs are horrible this year. My bet is they are the culprits.

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

That's what I originally thought it must be too, but I haven't seen a single earwig anywhere on my property yet. What I have seen, although not in their usual numbers of gazillions, are rose sawfly larvae. They never used to bother the miniatures or the species, but would almost completely defoliate all the other roses before I even noticed they were there again. I'll need to look closer to see if that is what is happening to the mini.

Perth,, ON(Zone 5a)

lol, ginnylynn I must have your earwigs........

The caterpillar population has decreased while the bird population has increased.... YAY robins!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

TOTALLY luv minis. Hardy and ever blooming. They look great in a border mixed with border dahlias ^_^ You can find them at grocery stores, hardware stores, crappy tire and garden centres.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

ginnylynn - the rest of your earwigs came here. In fact, I think they are responsible for the holes in the Hostas rather than slugs.

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

Apparently you're sharing them with drivenbonkers, and I seem to have everyone's nasty little green worms :-)

Ohhh! Mini roses and border dahlias - I'm going to have to do that next year for sure! Thanks for the tip.

Perth,, ON(Zone 5a)

lol, all the little green worms I find get fed to my baby bass.....

a whole barrel of mosquito control! the bass are too small to eat the earwigs...

Victoria Harbour, ON

Isn't it funny, I don't do well with roses but once I purchase these at Canadian Tire or Home Depot and plant they do wonders in the garden and winter well...

Blyth, ON(Zone 5b)

The only way that you could normally feed all of my little green worms to your bass would be by digging up the rose bush and dunking it right in the pond! There's usually quite literally hundreds of them - no way could you pick them by hand! This year I'm going to try Neem oil. I really don't want to use chemical insecticides and such that are likely to be toxic to the birds, toads, bees, and beneficial insects I'm attracting to my gardens.

Thanks for the replies! I have seen the miniature roses in grocery stores and such, but I am looking for roses that are even smaller than those like this one I have on my want list from the PlantFiles:

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/69163/

I was thinking about grabbing a miniature rose (I saw some beautiful, fragrant white ones in Safeway a couple weeks back) because I would like to have a rose, but I am renting and don't think the landlady would like a rose to suddenly appear :) Or the next tenants haha.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Oh my! I didn't even know those existed. How tiny! Good luck finding them.

WOW micro is right. Methinks I have to have one of them. I'll be on the lookout redheadedwonder and post if I find them.

edit: joanna_banana is a roseaholic. She'll be all over this.

I will post as well if I find some now that I know someone else is interested as well :)

"joanna_banana is a roseaholic. She'll be all over this"

Oh yeah, for sure she will....

That is a tiny little rose. I say plant a rose & move it if you move. Roses will survive in pots, but from your other postings, you were going to try to over winter it indoors. Even if you have a south facing window, remember that the amount of daylight hours is 9 for Nov, 8 for Dec, 9 for Jan. It will drop leaves and may not look very pretty indoors during those months. why not try a cheap little mini that the box stores sell for under $5 & see what happens.

Another option is Veseys has Angel Rose seeds. Haven't tried them, but they are on my list for next year. You seed them indoors in January/Feb and they should bloom by June.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I tried the Veseys seeds. Poor germinators and those that did were boring pink roses. Just my opinion.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Thanks...good to know. Scratched

I posted in the roses forum as well and received the following reply from stephanotis:

"The Heather Farm has some micro minis in its catalog. http://www.theheatherfarm.com/index.html ."

The site looks promising, but I have not ordered anything from them yet :)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I also found this site which seems to have some pretty good information about the different kinds of micro minis:

I have three roses I am interested in purchasing from the link I posted above. I was wondering if anyone in Calgary would be interested in purchasing any roses from them so we can get cheaper shipping/plants. I could take care of the order and let you know when it arrives and we can arrange a meeting place to distribute them. It looks like the roses are $6.25 each and shipping is $21.00 for up to 9 plants. If there are enough orders to get 10, we get a 10% discount and shipping is $2.10 per plant. Anyone interested?

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Yes, RedHeadedWonder - I would be interested!

I think SI is so pretty. I gather it's the tiniest one available. I don't really like the single roses, but the multi-petaled ones are so pretty.
The fact that Si has no scent isn't a deterent to me, cuz I have NO reliable sense of smell lol

When are you placing your order? I think 2 would be enough for me........

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I was just going to get interest for now. I figured a week should be sufficient for those interested to speak up and then I can get the order placed soon after. I will start up a list now :) Just to clarify - you want 2 Si?

I think Si is very cute. I am definitely ordering one for myself :) I am also getting the Cinderella and Yellow Bantam. I definitely picked Cinderella and Yellow Bantam for the smell :)

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

nope, not 2 SI - still looking @ I'm overwhelmed by the beautiful varieties........ have to figure out which ones I want, and try to hold myself to 2 of 'em LOL
I'm thinking I'll likely end up ordering 3 - now to figure out Which Three?!?!
(hold me back someone - they're all beautiful!!)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I know what you mean! I couldn't locate pictures of all of the micro minis and I decided it was better that way :)

Just give me a shout when you have what you want picked out :)

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

ok - will do!

Guess what, guess what??? I just came from HD, and with my $42 gift card (won @ bowling league this spring - it's what's left of it...) I bought a greenhouse!! I've wanted one for Ever-So-Long, and now I have one. It's 7' tall, and 6' square, so now I have to find a decent place to put it lol

Guess I'll need to ask Joannabanana the best way to use it lol She bought one this spring and I was in it - nice size! :-)

oh yeah - I'll check out the mini roses, too. Be nice to put one @ the office where I'll see it bloom al the time :-)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Exciting! I have been looking for a heating mat to help with germination, but can't find them anywhere so I was almost thinking of getting a small greenhouse. I just wish I had a place to put a big greenhouse!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I definitely in for a mini rose order but I'd like to wait til the spring. I don't have much luck with woodys planted late in the season and with ship time etc. it may be Sep. before they get here.

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

I think I'll grow 'em at the office. Seems the light here is good :-)

I checked around to see if anyone sold 'em here, and they sure don't!! They've tried to sell me a tree, then a miniature. They don't seem to know what Micro Mini Roses are......... Maybe we can educate them?!?!?!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

dahlianut - We can for sure wait until spring to order if most people would rather get them in the spring. Better for me not to spend money now with the new school year coming up :S Boo for $6000 tuition.

Tallulah_B - I emailed the greenhouse that supplies WalMart with minis, and they haven't got back to me (emailed a month ago maybe) yet. Perhaps they just think I am crazy haha.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

wowser tuition is steep :O

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Yikers - glad I don't have That tuition................
absolutely can wait until Spring

I know all about the WalMart "hurry up & wait for us to get back to you"
Supervisor there said he'd get back to me about a BBQ part - still waiting from 2 mo ago, now I can't get in touch with the Supervisor lol
Too busy, they tell me........

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Taking 6 classes/semester doesn't help haha. The bad part about the tuition is that it doesn't include books -_- There goes another few hundred dollars/semester.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

been there/done that redheadedwonder. Isn't that just the pits? I did a joint major many moons ago and my books pushed over $500 a year. Hang in there baby ^_^ it's worth it ^_^ Tallulah I order all my BBQ parts directly from the supplier in the manual. Way cheaper cuz you cut out the middle man. Of course you will get the guy stateside saying "Where exactly is Calgary? ^_^

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Hiya Dahlianut - I would order from the manual/supplier, except that I bought the BBQ from a friend who was moving "back home" and needed the $$. He'd lost the grill for the side burner, and I know that WalMart sells this particular brand. I had no luck calling the supplier's 800# cuz it wasn't reachable from our area....... So, Wally World - help me out............ and help me Wait, Wait, Wait.............. y'know, I've learned the waiting game lol

Ah well, vent over & done with...........
moving back to gardening LOL

Got my el-cheapo greenhouse up, and already it's paid for itself!! I put some tomato plants in, and they're looking really perky when they're usually fried by the heat, or chilled in the am......
Also going to see how long I can keep my Datura Inoxia seedlings going before I have to take 'em in the house for the winter :-)

Looks like fun :) My tomatoes are blooming like crazy and I have a few tomatoes, but there is nothing ripening yet :(

dahlianut -- I just heard about a coworker's friend who earned 100K on his internship. 0_0 I can't believe someone who hasn't graduated yet can earn that much! 20K/year sounds too good to be true even! lol.
