When we first moved here and put in a lawn 3 &1/2 years ago, we mistakenly did not use good dirt. Since we discovered that, we have top dressed the lawn 3 times with compost. It has improved somewhat. We have Zoysia.
I heard about Texas Greensand on this forum, and was wondering if we put it on the lawn during this heat if it would stress it or help it? And, how often you add something like this? We have highly alkaline soil.
Thank you all for your help. We are still learning what works here in Hill Country.
To green up a lawn question
Hi, Morgan,
I'm not in your zone, but I use Texas greensand regularly. I don't have zoysia, and most of my lawn is shaded so I don't have to worry so much about the heat. So, I can only guess at the answer to your question about the time of year.
I would not think that it would hurt anything to apply it now. It won't burn or anything like that. Texas greensand improves the soil, instead of feeding the plants directly. The plants then have the nutrients available for uptake as needed. My lawn greens up from it no matter when I apply it.
I've always seen it as a powder. We use a fertilizer spreader to spread it on the grass. I also mix it into my teas for my beds. For my acid-lovers I just toss some extra by the handful. Very easy.
Excellent!
I think we're going to go with it!!
Thank you so much.
