Birth of 2 hummingbirds.....

This is truly amazing. Be sure to click on NEXT PAGE at the bottom of each page; there are 5 pages in all. A lady found a hummingbird nest and got pictures all the way from the egg to leaving the nest. Took 24 days from birth to flight. Because you'll probably never in your lifetime see this again, enjoy; and please share. The photography is wonderful!!

Amazing...........I have heard that once they leave the nest to fly, they never return. Does anyone know if that is true?

Georgetown, TX(Zone 8a)

I don't know the answer to that question for sure, but my guess would be that it's true.

I remember there was a hummer nest on a shelf at my grandmother's house, complete with the branches it was built in that my dad had found when he was a kid. I don't know what happened to the nest when my grandparents passed on. I think I've heard now that it's illegal to have a bird nest, but I don't see the harm if the birds were finished with it.

Dallas, TX

OMG, why would it be illegal? I remember my grandmother saying it was bad luck to bother them. I guess either way you don't mess with them. I am still wondering what that white stuff is in the nest.
I got a bird in my house, been here since Friday ... it was in my bedroom...I open up all the doors and shooed it out, hoping it would fly out of here. I keep hearing these sounds that sound almost like a cricket. I wish I could find it before the cats do..

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Sylvia...Did you get the bird out or is it still in the house?

Dallas, TX

yes... I think its in the chimney. Mattie says that how they get in ... maybe so it was black I thought it might be a bat.:) ... the night before a big Black Butterfly was trying to get in ...

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I bet you have a bat with the sound you are describing. Try turning all your lights off at night and opening a door or window that has a light outside. Stay out of the area for a while so there won't be any movement in the room. Maybe it will leave.
I know when we had one loose in a building at work, we called a rescue group that came and captured the bat and relocated it. Call your City Animal Control and ask if they have a list of rescue groups in the area if you see for sure it is a bat.

Dallas, TX

omg! Sheila what am I going to do if its a bat? I dont want the cats to find it. And I know for sure its in the chimney, it made that strange noise and and Sara ran to the Chimney, but the fire screen stopped her .... omggggggg
I am scared to go home. Its has to be a bat now that you mention it. Thats not a bird sound and a bird could not live that long making those kind of sounds ... its been there since Friday.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey Sylvia...we used a group called Bat World. I just looked up the site and found a list of those people in TX you can call. Here is the link.

Ok Sheila ... I called the city ... animal control. They told me I need to call a commercial pest control company. They don't deal with anything like that. Haddis says she think its something open on top of the chimney outside thats making the noise, but she is going to send somebody out here to clean out the chimney. I was looking at the list of Bat people on your list, not a one of them is in Dallas.
Anyway ... that strange noise is still going on and Sara is still trying to get inside the chimney. I am glad that screen is there. Aren't bats blind?

This is on their home page. http://www.batworld.org/myths_facts/myths_facts.html

It could be something loose, especially if it is a constant sound. I doubt the bat would keep making the sound all the time. Take note if the wind is blowing outside when you hear it and calm out when you don't. It could also be birds nesting there that are feeding young.

Its not a constant sound, its not the wind as I pondered that. I heard it when I came home yesterday evening and last night about 10pm ... haven't heard it this morning..
