alstroemeria for free

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm digging up some alstroemeria from one of my beds and I'm wondering if maybe somebody would want to trade for some hostas or lilies of some sort. I also need to know how to store these. Can I just wash them off and keep them in sawdust or something?

Bump.

Alstroemeria are bulbs aren't they? Maybe I'm in the wrong forum?

yes Mary Lee, they are bulbs (at least roughly classified ). post a pic--then someone will want them

Try posting this in the plant trading forum and I'll bet you'll get lots of responses.

OK, thanks ya'll. It's a little cloudy today, but I'll try to get a picture. And I completely forgot about the trading forum.

I know the last time I gave bulbs away this spring--I posted here, TX forum, and trading forum all at the same time--they were gone within an hour--about equal response from each of the 3 forums

Well, if I did this right, you'll see a picture of my alstroemeria sans flowers.

Wow, it worked. The flowers are kind of a muted red, sort of pink...sort of. They are nice plants, but they just didn't do the job I needed them to do. I'm cleaning out this bed for hostas.

Silverfluter - don't give up on all alstromerias. They come in all sizes and robustness. I have had some really wimpy ones that barely flowers, and are very low to the ground. The main plants in my garden are ones that perform well as cut flowers and I have had several varieties of alstromerias that were great plants.

Soilsandup I kind of figured that some would be better than others. I didn't know anything about alstroemerias when I bought this one. It was just a stab in the dark. Next time I'll do some research. I saw some in the PF that looked much better than mine. In a different setting it might be a great plant. But in this spot I need something that stands out more. If I have to mail these, how do I do that? I found quite a few bulbs when I was digging that didn't have stems attached. I just put them in a pot with dirt. But I also have three pots of them with top growth. I'll be going to a RU in the spring, but I don't really want to keep these around that long.

I have never mailed any plants, so I won't be able to help you there. When I have received alstromeria roots or have given them away, the roots were dug out and put loosely in a pot (with or without any greenery). Below is one of my alstromerias that is about 3 feet tall, and spreads easily. I got a small pot from my sister three years ago, and have had to dig around it to keep it in check. Makes great cut flowers.

That's a nice bright color soilsandup that would brighten up a shady spot. I know what you mean about spreading. This bed I have mine in used to be an above ground fish pond. It has a cement bottom, but when the previous owner decided to drain it and make it a flower bed they drilled a hole at the bottom of the side just above the dirt so you don't see it. It's a pretty neat flower bed and the perfect place for alstroemeria because it can't escape.

Wow wish I had something to trade. I have the one that is red and green. It dies back now totally and starts coming out again in Nov. I think. Could that be why it looks bad right now?

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Hmmm. Could be Sandy. I think we have the same one. Mine has green spots on the tips of the petals. It blooms, but doesn't really seem too happy where it is, but it's the only place I have to put it where it won't escape.
