Does this work in Texas? Can it be grown by seed?
Buffalo Grass
Yes and yes! I hear it's not cheap, especially the plugs. I believe it's best to find it from a close source so that the seed is adapted to your areas climate etc. I would love to have it myself!

Oh wow, didn't know the water benefits of it! Green lush beauty with minimal watering! That'd help these days. Cool! Thank-you SO MUCH for the link!
Does anyone have it? I wonder how involved it is to change from bermuda.
No idea, but I'm sure folks will be sure to suggest you'll never rid yourself of Bermuda. I've only seen negative comments about it on Dave's, including it's ability to live through anything. :( To bad, as I planted that myself at another house, not even knowing it was so disliked!
Tir_Na_Nog,
Are you coming to the RU at Randy's? You're the newest kid on the block (kinda) and this would be a great place to meet all the Houston gang. Go to the Texas Gardeners thread and look for the Houston Area Gathering..Hope to see you there.
I'm new? LOL.
No, won't be going but hope ya'll have fun!
I'd sure love to try it in a spot and see how long it takes to grow and take over the bermuda. If it requires much less water then maybe the bermuda would go dormant then eventually die out. ? I think the Buffalo grass grows really slow tho.
My neighbor has a strange patch of Buffalo grass in her front yard of bermuda. She said the previous owner said he planted it there. It was so soft and such a pretty green!
Oh neat! We were wondering to about how long it might take to take over both Augustine and Bermuda. We have mostly Augustine.
Apparently it's not advised to seed Buffalo grass over exsisting grass of another variety. Shoot.... :(

Anyone know of any other sellers? Not sure how to look up this on PF's.

Says won't work in more than 1/2 a day of shade so the front yard which needs more sod may not work. :(
I think there are some grass farms raising it south of Houston.
Wish I had known about it when I sodded our yard - but that was 20 years ago.
Oh good info Bubba, thank-you.
We have Prarie Buffalograss, and personally, I would go with a different grass if I had to do it over. We had it sodded when we built our house, and we have a sprinkler system as well. It looked good the first year, but when it went dormant that winter, weeds took over. We have a small section of it left, where it still thrives. The rest of the yard has given up and now native bermuda is moving back in. Buffalo doesn't like most fertilizers or weed killers, so it helps if you are organic, and willing to work to make it look nice. On the other hand, if you wanted to have it in a field and don't care about it having a lawn-type look, it would be nice. The problem is it does not compete very well with the other weeds and grasses.
All that being said, I have seen reviews online where people really like their buffalo. Maybe it was me, or my site, but it didn't work out for us. Good luck
Yes, I also read, if you have any other type of grass don't bother, it will take over the buffalo. You also can't have it in an area that doesn't get sun at least half the day. So my shaded front yard is out.
