Xylitol (sugar substitute) toxic to dogs

Waterman, IL(Zone 5a)

A friend sent me this article an Xylitol, a sugar substitute found in chewing gum (ie. Orbit) and sugar-free candy. Dogs that get into this candy or gum can go into severe hypoglysemia and even liver failure if they eat too much.
Here is a link to the article she sent me: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/xylitol.asp
I don't give my dog gum or candy, but you know how they can get into stuff when you're not looking. They obviously know it's bad for dogs because according to the article, some companies using this stuff will reimburse people for their vet bills.

I apologize if this has already been discussed before. I can't hurt to bring it up again.
