Monster Wasp

Murphy, TX(Zone 8a)

Found this guy by the path today. I don't think I've ever seen a wasp this big!

Any idea what it is?

I dunno, but if you post pix on bugs I.D. forum, you may come up with more help there? That's one biggy!

Hi DallasDad,
I'm not from Texas but I was curious when I saw Monster Wasp showing up on the latest posts. When I looked at your photo I recognized the wasp as Sphecius speciosus, otherwise known as the Cicada Killer Wasp. It looks mean but rarely stings.

I believe that would be a Cicada Wasp...burrows into the ground to get to the nests..

We have two areas of flagstone with sand. Sure enough, there are burrows everywhere. Looks like a major infestation of these guys.

What fun.

Those guys are actually your friends....cicadas.....not!!

These are one of the Good Guys. No need to kill them as they very rarely pay any attention at all to us humans.
