Would someone please advise as to what is the easiest and hardiest banana tree for a beginner grower??

Fruiting or ornamental? Musa Basjoo is super easy and super hardy but it is ornamental; it blooms and makes bananas but they are tiny and inedible.
You might contact Stan McKenzie in Scranton, SC, not too far from you. He grows and sells hardy citrus and I suspect he grows or could recommend bananas for your area.

I saw this one at the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardnes in Charlotte and had to have it. Should do well for you too. Jenny (bordersand jacks) just picked up a Siam Ruby and that one is awesome.

Plantdelights in NC has many and if they are hardy in Raleigh you are safe.

I bought an edible banana, Raja Puri, at that herb place in Murrells Inlet last year. They had a good selection of edibles and ornamentals back then and probably do this year too.
