I have just become addicted to these guy's. Doe's anyone know of a variety that can survive outside, other than the plain white ? I have seen one that was pink in a yard, I've stopped to ask what variety it is but there is never anyone home. (isn't is amazing what we gardeners will do for a plant !)
hardy in zone 7?
Mother in zone 7a in north Alabama has hers come back from the roots... she cut them off even with the ground... AMA .. and has had them come back from the roots.. the mulched ones came back first.. I'm really in the same zone here in NYC.. but unfortunately.. I have no ground for them to winter in.. Gordon
GordonHawk thanks for the info! I'm going to try it. I have bought 6 this year and I might put in 1/2 of them and over winter the others.

Eddie thanks I appreciate the info, of course all of the ones I have came from the flea market without names and many still are not blooming so there going to be a suprise. I think I will play it safe this fall and get cuttings just in case! I have a small green house I can put cuttings in but the hole plants would fill it up real quick, I cant beleive how big these things get !
I have three pink brugs in pots, which we have to lug into our sunroom in the fall. It would put a smile on DH's face (only temporarily) if I told him that he wouldn't have to struggle getting them into the sunroom. The smile would then turn into a frown if I told him we could put them in the ground, as that would mean digging three VERY LARGE HOLES in the rocky Arkansas soil. We are in Zone 7 as far as I can tell. My question is -- should they suvive the winter here with some heavy mulching? We have to cut them back in order to even get them through the door now. Perhaps I should just root some cuttings from them and start all over again and put them in a SMALL HOLE outside! I found out how easy they are to root one year when I cut them back and threw the cuttings on top of our mulch pile and they rooted!
Cuttings are easiest to start during the longest days of peak growing season . I just take some trimmings or cuttings and poke them in the ground by the mother plant , water and watch.
Take extra trimmings/cuttings to be assured you will have at least one lovely potted brug to bring in over winter.
Tth traditional taking of cuttings in the Fall is reducing the chances for a new plant because the growth hormones have already begun to regress in preparation for dormancy.

Great info!!
Now how did you get that dancing banana : ) ?????
scooterbuger, some of mine are about 4 feet tall now but all on a single trunk (stem) do you ever pinch out the top? to get more side ways growth! Megan O
Never have pinched a top growth unless it was to fit it into the house lol lol
Pinching tips wil surely lessen your chances of getting blooms as they must make the 'Y' on their own. The 'Y' is not the same thing as side branching that results from pinching a growth point.

Scooterbug, I think I'm going a little crazy, I have lots of sid growth ! I just didn't notice I guess because there leaves are so big, that they cover everthing up, I noticed this morning I finally have some buds! I cant wait to see what I have, I bought these from a lady on ebay andshe said I would get a mixed lot so I will have no idea what I have until they bloom. The daturas are already blooming. But the size of my brugs is unreal for just a couple of months growth. Megan O
WOW!! what are you feeding it, it has a ton of buds on it! I counted 4 buds on mine, and I'm feeding it Miracle Grow 2 times a week, I did get THE RECEIPE and I'm going to try that for the fun of it! MeganO
Megano, I live in No. CA, Zone 7b, I have tried for 3 years to just leave a few in the ground, mulched well & covered, never had a one come back. Luckily I have always taken cuttings, so still have the plants. I guess it makes a difference if the cold continues for many days or just dips down a night or two. The last few winters we have had weeks of 18 & 19 degree temps. Hard to remember those mornings when it's 95!
