starting taccas from seed

Louisville, KY

Does anyone have experience doing this, or is it just better to buy the plant at blooming size?
Iv'e started a few last week and followed the directions: sow on top of rich soil, cover with 1/4 in. vermiculite, spritz well,, keep moist, warm and in light for up to nine months. I also started these in a plastic container w/lid and air holes, covered what I thought was letting in too much air to keep from drying out.
Thanks for any help.

Plantgeek, call Brian's Botanicals down there in Louisville, Merl or Brian could probably tell you. I've only had the black one, and sadly it did not winter over and I never got to see a bloom. DG'er Gordo, I think also knows about this unique plant.

Thanks AuntB, will do. Sorry about your bat plant. I got one a couple of weeks ago, just past blooming, and I'm hopeing to get it through the winter too. I figure if my snakes are happy with conditions inside, it will be too.
If I ever get sprouts, I'll post something.

Great. I did get a pup, and passed it on but I don't think there was enough humidity where I tried to winter over... I was in denial till May, I thought (hoped) it had just gone dormant. There is a thread around here somewhere (maybe tropical plants) on how to care for it. Hope you get to post bloom pics! -B

Hmmm... sounds like I ought to keep mine in the same room with the snakes during winter. I keep a humidifier going,as it gets dry here. I'm sure the little darlings would appreciate some foliage too. ;)

I'm sure Brian knows about them. Tell him I said hi if you call. So yours bloomed and then went dormant? Like, I'm going to try one again any time soon- I'm not, but I'm still curious.. lol

Will do.
No, it hasn't gone dormant as far as I understand, no foliage dying back. Brian said that these plants simply bloom when they feel like it. Maybe it should be called a cat flower instead.

LOL, I'd agree with the name change. And THAT didn't help you a lot, huh? I think they are heavy feeders when they are growing.. Do a seach on the tropical plant forum for "bat Plant" (not Cat Plant, tehe) I'll see if I can find the thread I'm remembering.

Hee hee, yeah THAT should say it all. I'll treat it like my siamese cat and it should flourish all over the place. Thanks for all your help on this. If I ever do get seedlings, I'll send you one if you'd like to try this finicky Morris again.

Thanks for the offer, I want to, but I don't think I'm ready for a finicky one again, just yet. Too many brug and plumie youngins getting all my attention. But Do post pics of your blooms, I love to see them.

You're welcome, Sheri, Thank you for the kind offer. I just noticed no one had replied to you. Although my experience with them is limited, I'm more than happy to share what I know. Good luck with your cat plant. :)

Ooh, a white tacca.! Next on my list. If seeds don't work, then I may try bulbs. I know it's easier to just get the plant, but want to give it a try. It would be quite stunning to have a few of both varieties in bloom together.
Thanks to both of you and I''l keep you posted.
