Hello All!
I have four Arisaema and one is growing and spreading particularly well. A friend was here and fell in love with one. I would like to dig it up to give her a corm but I'm not sure of the best time or method. I believe it's A. ringens. My chickens stole the tags on all but A. urashima. Ahem!
Second question. They appear to have seeds but the spathes have turned brown and curled over. They look like small light green seeds. How do I know if they are ripe/good?
Last. This is the plant in question, that I believe to be A. ringens.
Dividing Arisaema, seeds and ID.
A. sikokianum (photo)?
Is it normal for A. urashima to go dormant and not the others? It still has a tag but no plant. I dug down in the dirt a few inches and the corms are still firm and pink.
Sorry for so many questions at once, but I'd like to get them permanently tagged with metal tags since the chickens eat the nursery tags! I'm really enjoying these plants and they've proven hardy here. :)
Bad BWillams will know Paul
I've only been growing/collecting them for a couple of years so only have about 7-8 differnet ones. I used to collect amrophs but stopped heating the greenhouse so switched to araseamas and arums.
Anyway, from what little I know about them I would suggest dividing in late summer (or fall) when they go dormant.
My urashima has gone dormant this year already too ;) My hybrid jack frost is also going dormant.
If the only patterned leaf jack you have is sikkokianum, then yes, that last pic is it.
I've never tried seeds. If they are ripe though I would guess they will turn red in color.
Hopefully some else with more knowledge/experience will come along with more and better info for us both :)
Hi Jody! How are you lady??
Thanks for the info. I was thinking the seeds should turn red, like berries. I thought I remember seeing something with white seeds as well but that may have been Philo or Monstera or ears or? I'm can't remember. It looks like the spathes on these dried before they ripened.
I'm good thanks! :) Just been really busy, the way of life ya know... We are getting mechanical and plumbing inspections on the new house Friday :) Hopefully by spring I'll be decorating... maybe, hoping, LOL.
But trying to take care of 2 properties that are 3 hourse apart, 3 houses, my mom and get some gardenging done... not much time for anything else. But... life is good, no complaints :)
How bout you? You got enough bedrooms in that new place? ;)
I haven't had any seeds mature on any of my jacks. I just don't know enough about them to say why though. Maybe this winter I'll have some "reading/ research" time LOL.
I'm thrilled to hear about the new house! It seems like you've had two states forever. LOL I'm glad to say we are finally finished with out other house-three years later! We only had to drive an hour back and forth but dragging six kids made it seem like longer. ;)
We have four bedrooms at the new house with plans to build on someday-hopefully BEFORE the kids move out! We just found out another will be moving in....surprise! I'm less thrilled with the house than I am about having 7 acres! I FINALLY have room for everything. chuckle
I'll have to check on those seeds again and get a picture. They don't look mature to me at all.
I thought I'd bump this back up in hopes someone might have an answer. The plant I asked about has not gone dormant. I'm thinking maybe it does not go dormant until frost? I'd like to send my friend part of it before it gets too cold so it can settle in. I bought mine potted in the spring so I didn't really need to know anything besides where to plant it. It's happy!
I really don't want to destroy it by digging at the wrong time.
Hey Chele, remember me? lol Did you ever get my Dmail about giving me a start?
Thanks and love ya.
