East Texas RU Group Weekly Chatter 7/13 - 7/20

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Hello everyone! Hope you've enjoyed having our little local group together this week. It has sure been easier for me to find ya'll! I really enjoy canning. I do feel badly about being in a plant group and not really having plants to trade, but hey, at least I have something so I can feel like I'm giving back. Hope everyone has a great week and doesn't get too hot!

Doesn't get too hot? Karen, you must be dreaming, I think it gets hotter every summer.

Good Sunday morning! I started a new shade garden in a corner of my yard thanks to David and Emma....Going out to water my new ferns and mosses and hoping they'll live to see another day, LOL!

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

gee almost 9 and you were just going out to water??? LOL...been out and watered and EM1'ed everything and was done before 10 and I didn't go to bed till after 11:30 LOL...had to wait and do the terrace area last as the hummers were getting their fill on the flowers

Karen
Put the soaker hose that you gave me around the bed with Fl. azaleas, hydrageas and brugs. Seems to work great. Will have the others installed soon so I now hae a better watering system. What we need is a good soaking rain. Maybe this week...dreaming again.
Still have some things to plant out from the RU. What about daturas....full sun or part shade ? I think these are the purple and the yellow ones. Oh well, here they will be part shade reguardless.
Have a good one.

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Dave I'm so glad you could get some use out of the soaker hoses. I think part shade would be best anyway on the Daturas as they limp so badly in the hot sun. The purple ones are gorgeous, I just got some double purples from a friend.

Got your rain today, didn't you Tyler/J'ville folks? News said 5" fell in some parts. Oh to be on DD's front deck this evening listening to the babbling creek, frogs too.

Did someone say rain? Sure wasn't here. I don't know about those news guys, they don't predict the weather real accurate and seems like now they're making up things.

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

we had rain early this afternoon but not 5" unless they were using a drinking glass to measure it all.
I tried for more cleaned the car inside and out ...it rained as I was doing the inside and had to stop then finished inside and washed the outside ...it looked like it might rain a lil more around 7 but nothing happened.

We got a pretty good rain last night but nothing today. Sure could use a couple more days.

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

Doggone it, Frankston was supposed to be under flash flood watch with up to 3 inches fast and we didn't get doodly-squat but a hard sprinkle for about 5 minutes.

I have a Brug and Datura question? Do Brugs and Daturas re-seed themselves? I have mine in the ground, a whole bed full of seedlings. Do I need to put them in pots and bring them in my house in the winter? I don't have a greenhouse. Thanks!

(Karen) Frankston, TX(Zone 8a)

oh another question please. I was asking Phyllis about keeping hostas safe here during the winter and she suggestion mulching. I have never mulched anthing for over "over wintering", only for attractiveness over the summer months. In the winter do you just mulch the roots good again, or mulch over the entire plant? Thanks, I know it's a stupid question, hahah!

Well Antique if you were here you would only see things begging for a drink. Rained Sunday night for 15 minutes, Monday about the same, maybe total quarter inch if that. Wished for more but will take what you get.
Karen
Most brugs will return from the roots each year. A good load of pine straw around the dead stick after the first frost helps these. I cut the dead trunk off at about 6" to a foot so I can locate it. If you cut the brug just prior to the freeze you can make cuttings from it that root easily in water. Cuttings above the Y are best since they will bloom sooner the next year.
For dats, the common white one will return from roots each year. Others do not for me. Collect the seed pods of these and let them dry well, store them and plant them out next year.
Others like kenboy/maggie can give better advise on these as they are the real pro at it.
Back at rain dance today.

DD, I agree with you on Maggi and Ken being the expert on overwintering brugs. Their yard is full of brugs and lots of other goodies. Forthose who haven't been up to Maggi's nursery, we went on opening day, it's certainly worth the trip. Not only can you shop for some things you don't see inthe box stores, you can tour the garden, not a blade of grass in sight, and visit with the peacocks. There's also a really nice dog, actually three, and a kitty. You can also get all your questions answered about everything they grow.

Antique-Looks like the table has turned and time for her to rock me now. Think her legs would drag the ground if I did it now. Brag on Mama, you earned it.
Got to get up to ken and maggie's one day. Have wanted to for a while. The brug I got at the RU is a growing fool.
On hostas, you can grow them here but deep shade and lots of water for me.
And the rain is where ?

Was suppose to rain last night and nothing. Now said 10 tonight. It is now !0:30 nothing. It is so hot and the plants fry and so do I. My brugs are being eaten but not sure by what. GRRRRRRRRR they are tiny stubs.

Hoping for rain everywhere.

Blessings,
Sandy ^8^
