If you could have only one...

North Augusta, ON

What would you recommend?
I've decided to try a Brug.

What is the easiest, flashiest, best smelling one there is?

It has to live indoors 9 months of the year.

Congratulations Threegardeners! I don't think it's possible for anyone to have only one brug. You must have two... or three or 20 or 100! Mine are in my basement growing very slowly under lights from Nov-May.. during this time, they aren't the prettiest and I often have battles with aphids. Spider mite is another pest that seems to attack brugs growing inside. Mites like dry air and brugs. Where would it (they) be the 9 months indoors? A greenhouse, in the dining room window? Consider warmth, light and humidity conditions where they will grow and is height a factor? Some brugs can grow 15ft or more.

Considering their toxicity, and the fact that I have 6 cats and 2 dogs, they'd probably spend the winter in a closed off bedroom(plant room), west window. Really, really, warm bedroom. I can provide supplemental lighting if needed and I've fought the bug battle too ^_^ and occasionally won. Can't be too tall, 15' would be a problem. I have hot water heating, so it isn't too dry, compared to forced air anyways.

Oh yea...one more important thing...it has to be available in Canada(sigh)

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

OH..if your a bug fighter.. you'll have plenty of fun with Brugs.. always a new battle..
with a good knife..lopper.. or clipper.. height is no problem.. I have to remember to keep them dryer inside..water lightly seems to work the best for me.. it keeps down the tip die back inside.. outside they drink to their hearts content.. with no sign of it..
I've experienced Canada has been no problem getting cuttings.. you might try 3-4 to start... that way you can see your efforts taken in different ways by different plants... nice to know some are really OK .. while others might be suffering with the same care..
as far as the flashiest.. they are all over the top.. among plants
best smelling... well they are all heavenly..shredded white might be that for me..
easiest to grow.. can't really say.. they all have their moments... Gordon

Three, so your growing season is 3 months long? I've had brugs outside growing for 4 mos and still no blooms the first year. If you can keep them green in the bedroom they may bloom inside (for sure w/more lighting) and sooner outside. I'm with Gordon, get 3 or 4 kinds and see which ones perform the best for you. I'm not sure what kinds are available for you up there. Try Extras, on your DG home page, on the green strip under the tabs at the top of the page. You can search DG subscribers by zip code. Gordon, isn't there some brug growers from Canada here on the DG brug forum?

Thanks all for the input. LOL @ 3 or 4 to start. I can only have one...just one.
Growing season is short, last frost was June 5th-ish and we can count on one early in Sept.

Do they have a dwarf size, are their blooms as big and as scented?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Charles Grimaldi is a shorter growing brug and the blooms are standard size. Mine is still small and not of blooming age. There are shorter plants that bloom smaller blooms, too.. Alex is one. He is only about 4-5 ft in a pot for me. Here is a link, I hope you find info to help in your search for 1 lone brug.... Probably 1 this year, but if you have a good experience, I predict you'll find room for a couple more next year... ;) http://www.abads.net/ I tried to search DG for members in your area, but you have to search by zip code and I couldn't figure out what your zip codes are up there.

Hey ThreeG,
I must warn you, you won't end up with just one ;) I started with one seedling this spring which hasn't even bloomed yet..........and...err...I already have FIVE more on the way with no idea where half of them will go for the winter.....................................

Mine's actualy been outside since April, I was told they can be left out as long as it's above 10C (50F), so thats what I did and he did great in the cool spring weather! Just an occasional visit indoors when there was a frost risk.

That's good news Steven, about them liking the cooler temps...I keep telling myself I have enough will power to stop at just one, we shall see.

I just have to find the right one, I checked the place in Quebec, but they seem to be sold out of all of the ones I like...any ideas why that may be, hmmmmm?

Congrats on your new finds and keep us posted on how they do for you.

(Zone 6a)

hehehehe, I'll be sure to keep you posted!
I know some others on the canadian forum have bought from the place in Quebec, so I maybe they beat you to it?
Mines just a plain suaveolens pink but if your interested I can send you a cutting when it gets bigger.
BTW, stopping at one is very hard.....and I made the 'mistake' of looking on the marketplace and ended up ordering one of the crosses forsale. Not to mention the Dger was nice enough to add in a free gift which was more seeds from a different cross! And since the seeds are hybrid each one will turn out different!!! OH NO!

I looked!! Didn't realize they were so expensive...but I'm pretty cheap. I am very tempted to get one though...I bookmarked the site, if I look enough times, cheap or not, I'll eventually talk myself into one ^_^

threegardeners, Brugs are like tattoo's, and potato chips, you can't stop with just one!!!
I started out just a little over a month ago, with just one brug, and I now have 11. They are all in pots for me, as our soil is really hard and rocky. Someone told me they don't get as big in pots. I have not had one bloom yet, but am anxiously waiting for it.
So you may as well tell your self, ok, maybe 2 or 3... then you just keep getting another one...
Linda Kay

One is one too many because after that you won't be able to stop ...so brace yourself ... prepare to fall in love.

double dose of dynamite fert in the pots and weekly dose of mg liquid and lots of water! lol . The seem ok so far. Still amazes me the difference in the leaves and growth patterns from the same parents.
